Just because we've managed to fill up a whole thread doesn't mean we're done talking about it!

So here you go, a place to hang out while we rewatch obsessively wait for season 2!

I didn't think the 'love of my life' line rang true.

squoosh · 29/04/2015 10:23

He craved the fire and carnage to avenge Julia's death, but at the same time he was able to provide the solace and love his wife needed at this awful time.

You read a lot more into it than I did!

I saw a guy who had just buried his daughter and whose wife was near death having an exciting time on the beach. Seemed so odd to me, as if the scene had been shot before the child had died.

VelvetGreen · 29/04/2015 11:12

I thought the 'love of my life' line was a bit incongruous too - even if he was to say it i can't imagine him saying it to Elizabeth.

I don't remember that whole scene (E visiting the sick D) happening in the books, while D certainly did go and help them at Trenwith. The 'have you come to take him' line worked much better because it highlighted Demelza's fear (knowledge?) that a part of Ross was still E's. I suppose the love my life addition was an attempt to get us to believe that he is now D's completely. Maybe they wanted him to believe that himself.

I think that scene, although not authentic to the books, set up a lot of what is to come, and was maybe necessary as they can't portray the thoughts in someone's head in the same way as in the book.

drwitch · 29/04/2015 12:49

In the books the wrecking is a lot more about getting revenge on the warleggans

I now know how they are going to deal with the VBT

Softcookie · 29/04/2015 14:24

I think it was also meant to wound Elizabeth, who after all had been unwittingly a reason for Julia's death.

Oh Ross, you twisted, manipulative, gorgeous bastard

I'll come back to this thread when I've recovered from the sadness of this episode but marking place in the meantime while I go and howl somewhere in a corner for poor little Julia, for Demelza's loss, her lost goodbye, for Ross holding his baby in her final moments, for Demelza's kindness and utter goodness, for the insecurity and fear she expressed in her moments of hallucinations, but most of all, for the exquisite tenderness and love that Ross shown to Demelza and the strength she took from having him by her side. Sad

Pass a tissue.

Softcookie · 29/04/2015 16:12

I don't think Ross is incapable of love, btw, but I think his version of love is twisted with possessiveness, resentment and all sorts of nasty things.

Cue the VBT

OMG TheDiet! You want to see me dead or what?!?

Star21 · 29/04/2015 21:39

Yes this is definitely at odds with the book where no one from Trenwith comes to the funeral or to look after Demelza and no 'love of my life' declaration from Ross but I am enjoying this version far more, beautifully acted episode.

TheDietStartsTomorrow · 29/04/2015 21:43

*Softcookie" Grin, all you have to do is imagine yourself in that scene where Ross tells Demelza and think of her arm around her head as she cries into his chest and then take a deep breath. All will be well.

nannyj · 30/04/2015 11:26

I'm having a Poldark marathon today. Am still crying at the last episode!

Softcookie · 30/04/2015 14:15

Got books 1-3 yesterday! Started on my way to work. Excellent cure for withdrawal symptoms!

I was wondering what putrid throat was -
Diphtheria maybe (but doesn't have a rash) or Scarlet Fever which has a sore throat, but not severe enough I don't think.

Softcookie · 01/05/2015 22:06

Anyone reading the books and fancies talking about them? Just finished the first one. Really enjoyed it!

OP posts:
snozzlemaid · 01/05/2015 22:21

I'm reading the first one now for the third time.
The strange thing is that in some scenes I see/hear Ross played by Aidan but in other scenes Robin Ellis appears. I've always had him in mind when reading before but thought Aidan would be Ross now I've recently seen the remake.
All other characters I'm now seeing as played by new actors, but I guess my brain's not ready to give up 40 years of Robin El?is being Ross.

wowfudge · 02/05/2015 16:41

Putrid throat = diphtheria Norah.

Gunks · 04/05/2015 15:16

I missed the first episode of Poldark... anyone know where I can safely watch it.. so many sites on youtube etc are scams..... it is not on iplayer anymore... shame...

snozzlemaid · 04/05/2015 16:03

It's £1.89 on iTunes or £2.49 if you want it in HD.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 04/05/2015 18:50

I have a question about the copper smelting business. (I have read the books several times, but not recently)

I understand they set up the smelting company in order to buy copper from local mines at a fairer price for the mine owners (inc Ross, obv) but why did it have to go through that auction thing at all? Why couldn't they just sell it directly?

& then, if it was the law that they had to go through the auction (???) surely the 'S Wales' company paying prices higher than they could pay would be great for the mine owners at that auction; & they'd have all that extra money for the copper they'd sold, plus the money they didn't have to spend this time, to pay an even higher price next time.

Of course I've no idea what the costs would be of a smelter sitting idle...

Am I overthinking this? Grin

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 04/05/2015 18:53

snozzlemaid, I have switched completely from seeing/hearing RE to AT. I think it's the voice (RE's was great but AT's is somehow better)

RE was a more grown-up Ross but AT seems better suited to all the derring-do!

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 04/05/2015 18:56

Final question - new Capt McNeil - what is going on with his accent? (I just watched last 2 episodes today)

He rolls his Rs beautifully but the rest of his 'Scottish' accent seems strangely unstable

snozzlemaid · 04/05/2015 20:43

I've finished the first book now and as the book went on I did just hear AT. I think it's because the series was so close to the books. So much of the dialogue came directly from the books, which I hadn't realised despite reading them before.
I thought the same about the smelting company - they should have still benefited from the other company buying the copper at higher prices, as they are the mine owners.

Ineedtimeoff · 05/05/2015 20:07

but... it's the cost of starting up the smelting company that's put them in trouble. Also, the benefit of higher copper prices will be short lived if the smelting company closes. As soon as it does the Warleggans will have the monopoly again and will be able to pay their abysmally low prices that almost put the mines out of business in the first place.

I'm reading now 'The Stranger from the Sea'. I think it's about 8th in the series. The books now start to focus on the children who are just coming into their own. I'm still enjoying them but I'm a bit disappointed that there's not a lot more about Ross and Demelza's relationship... actually, I just want some more sex scenes between them.

NorahDentressangle · 06/05/2015 07:42

Henry Garrett who plays Capt McNeil
is English and attended the New York Lee Strasbourg Acting Studio - must be a friend of someone or surely they could have found a Scottish actor.
