Did anyone watch Far Right& Proud on BBC3 by Reggie Yates?

I was completely and utterly horrified by what was shown. I have always hated the fact that I am of Russian descent, but having seen the programme I am so, so, so embarrassed by the fact like never, ever before. And it's not like I haven't read stories about the abuse or seen video clips, but somehow on the show it came across downright chilling. All these young people, some as young as 14 engaging in this criminal activity, and all done with a smile and presented to peacefully and pleasantly, you would think they were discussing Sunday School. I honestly don't know what is going on in that country. Next week it will be about gay rights, and I honestly don't think that I can bring myself to watch it.

I watched it and thought Reggie was very brave. What is more scary is these people are still young and are growing more and more into dangerous beings. The model girl who says they are ready to press the button?! Shocking and chilling Shock.

I was so disturbed watching this that I actually had to turn it off - I have recorded the programme and will watch the end at some other point. It is horrifying that this level of hatred and intolerance exists in 21st century. Reggie Yates was incredibly brave and should be commended for his reporting.

He really was brave. I had to watch it in two sittings as it was just too much for one night, and I am no gentle soul. You could feel his discomfort through the screen, especially when that asshole was saying how white should stay pure like thoroughbreds. I guess he knows shit about genetics and just how many diseases thoroughbreds can have.

And yes, it is scary just how young everyone was. That's the future of the country! And that model was saying how she wants Russia to become whole again by taking back the breakaway countries- I am guessing she forgot to ask those countries whether they want to be back.

Yes it was very disturbing. And all credit to Reggie Yates for going out there and putting up with the morons, he was amazingly brave. It would have been easy for him to bottle out and tell the BBC to send a white reporter, but no, he carried on.

What is wrong with these people? The situation over there is chillingly reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s. The Russians bravely fought against fascism in WWII and so many of their people were killed, now these young thugs by embracing right wing extremism are betraying everything their grandparents fought for.

Goodness knows what will happen over the next decade.

Just watching the second episode. It's so disheartening and soul destroying. It's especially awful when you can understand what is being said and the nuances in the voices/ language used. And they call that place a democracy.

I missed it but I watched Mondays episode with the horrific homophobic Russian right-wingers Shock Angry .

SunnyBaudelaire · 23/04/2015 14:03

I watched it with horror last night esp the stories of the young lesbian and young gay male activist.
Nonetheless you had to see the humour of someone being so anti gay yet stripping naked in a bathhouse and whipping Reggie with some twigs. So v v gay.
I love Reggie Yates.

Part of me was quite annoyed by the fact that they didn't mention just how severe the abuse can be towards both immigrants featured last week and LGBT people from this week's episode. I have seen videos of extremists setting people on fire just because they didn't look Russian- even though they were, just from the more Asian end of Russia. I have read accounts of people being sodomised, beaten within an inch of their life, many having been left severely disabled for life. And so many of such attacks are carried out by young teens. Obviously I am not saying that those people who were shown didn't suffer. But it would have been nice to be told just how bad the abuse is. Always unpunished, even when a murder has been committed.

so Dillite, do you think that if the communist revolution had not happened, society in the ex SovIet Union would now be different?

SunnyBaudelaire · 23/04/2015 16:41

except it would not be the ex soviet union of course, but you know what I mean1

DoctorLawn · 23/04/2015 17:49

I've got a lot of time for Reggie Yates. I'm glad he's been given this more 'serious' work to do.

It was hideously uncomfortable viewing at many different points.

Russia is a very worrying place right now.

dillite · 23/04/2015 18:30

Sunny it's a tricky question. When the union broke up, I was 4. Also, I come from an ex-union country, so although I grew up in a Russian speaking family, the general societal attitudes were different. But, when I read news online/ Talk to my mother/ grandmother, etc. I honestly do think it would be different. And by different I mean that as it was in the union- there were no gays in Soviet land. Homosexuality was the disease of the west. Same as disability.

Ironically, the most famous Russian poet, Pushkin, was an out and proud gay.

It's modelling tonight on extreme Russia.

RY is already pulling lots of Hmm faces.

Jacobsmum1972 · 27/04/2015 23:00

The modelling was a bit easier to watch than the first two, them poor poor girls.
Fantastic series by Reggie Yates

cantstopreadingthenews · 01/05/2015 01:04

I too found the series very revealing, when you take off the make-up of what lies beneath.
Kudos to Reggie on his presenting, being there and staying. Nice to see the BBC supporting his move to more serious topics. As opposed to the regular guys running across South America, Asia and Africa; whose reception is very different. Reggie showed how the UK's multi-culturalism (there I said it), is not just talk.
Like many I find Russia and the rest of the Soviet countries very interesting, their ethnic range is amazing, and the difference from country to country so vast not just in distance but in economics and social attitudes.

I only watched the 1st and last. The 1st was appalling, if vaguely understandable - this is an isolated nation that had ruled the roost - of course they want to return to the status quo. But why they considered people from other Soviet nations as undesirable foreigners - was sheer tribalism (Africa & Asia); and quite hard to understand. Surely they all spoke Russian. As for immigrants, well look at what is happening all over Europe - as living standards have dropped people always blame foreigners first instead of incompetent governments who fail to plan ahead, or listen to advisors from the front-line (& similar countries) to help them form effective policy and practices.
I do feel sorry for the young teenagers being brainwashed into this, they will always live as victims.
But not all Russians are like this, many are more open and liberal, they should be proud of their nation - they have every right to be. But no-one should look down on other people's nation. Life is not simple anywhere - history tells us that.

The models, so young & beautiful, full of dreams, just like our talent shows - ripe to be taken advantage of. How can you deny them, their chance to shine, when they have worked so hard? But Russia needs its young to shine at home - to maintain a buoyant economy. It cannot just depend on the fast buck - if it is to retain its culture of hard-working people.

All in all, this is the type of documentary I'd like to see about other parts of Europe.
Well done, to all involved.
