Hi there to everyone - my 1st message. I have been enjoying Mumsnet for about a year, from the sidelines.
This documentary, I hadn't wanted to watch it cos' I knew it would be hard to take. But I had to watch it, and comment on it - so you got me now.
It is tragic that in 2015 some cultures, and not just those in developing countries etc., Even here in the UK, some men & boys are just as sexist and downright evil to women.
this is not about religion or culture, its about women colluding in their own abuse and disrespect, it's in how we raise our boys and tolerate crap from our menfolk. I was just told off yesterday for trying to excuse my EH and DH of belittling me in public - why did I do that? I hate to say this is about us learning and remembering to assert ourselves just that little bit more, every once in a while.
Men, and some women will always take advantage of those they perceive to be weaker than them. Many will do anything to maintain the status quo and even cover up terrible crimes/abuses. Small abuses often lead to more and bigger abuses.
Instead we need to shout out & say no abuse in my home, no abuse anywhere (even in jest) because sexual, physical and verbal abuse are wrong, evil and absolute NO Nos.
I did have my doubts about the Beeb showing this, but they were right to. This is what our young teenagers and those at university need to see, the reality of harsh world, where even there youth know what is wrong and are prepared to march for justice.
We keep celebrating International Women's Day, but here we are complaining about equal representation again.
India had Indira Gandhi and loads of female professionals, while there are still many out here & there who choose to treat women and girls like property.
Wherever and whatever their reasons or backgrounds - without women there will be no world, no society and no families -
We deserve better - wherever we live.
