Just seen this advertised as coming up on BBC 4.
I watched the American version with Toni Collette which wasn't brilliant but might give this a go.
Homelands was based on Prisoners of War, another Israeli drama which was very good.

I found this series absolutely gripping and at times, felt physically drained by the dramatic tension! I found the ending a bit disappointing, in that I couldn't understand the motivation of some of the characters - especially Giyola. I also wondered why they didn't just go to the pm with the tape and get him to agree to be a bone marrow donor. Also, how would Yael be able to carry on working in the hospital with Giyola when all this had happened?

But great TV and I am now disappointed that I didn't see the Israel version of a Homeland.

EachandEveryone · 15/03/2015 14:56

It was fantastic wasn't it? Are they going to kill the PM after the transplant? I agree, the ending was confusing. I haven't read anything about a second season.

LouiseBrooks · 15/03/2015 19:30

I don't think there is one. I thought this was great. Yes the ending was a bit uncertain but it was enjoyable and thrilling tv (not ot mention I have discovered a new hearthrob in Jonah Lotan!)

EachandEveryone · 16/03/2015 09:10

Surely the public would've wanted to see him laid out? Or wasn't he important enough?

LouiseBrooks · 16/03/2015 13:29

I did think surely his wife might want to see the body? I also wonder what would happen to him afterwards but since Adam in effect saved him from being murdered, perhaps the PM would gratefully just slink off into the sunset.

Someof it was implausible of course, but many thrillers are. You get caught up in it at the time and afterwards find lots of flaws. I still really enjoyed it.

It was a million times better than the ridiculous Inspector Montalbano.

Cheeseandhamtoast · 16/03/2015 13:40

Jewish people are generally buried the same day or next day, so if wife had already seen him dead in the operating theatre, then she probably wouldn't see him again.

Was worried when the family went straight back to their house. I think I would have kept away! And how would they do bone marrow transplant if they are not in a hospital??

EachandEveryone · 16/03/2015 15:06

Will Yael be involved in that I wonder?

SamG76 · 16/03/2015 17:43

Thanks to everyone for clearing it up. I was baffled by the ending, which I found disappointing compared to the rest of it. How do we know they are getting divorced? I'm sure he or she said that he had done this (presumably losing the family savings) more than once, so why shouldn't she forgive him again. And who ended up with the money in the holdall?

SamG76 · 16/03/2015 17:44

Is the idea that the PM will die during the bone marrow transplant, or will he be given some sort of new appearance and live out his days abroad?

RocknRollNerd · 16/03/2015 17:47

I agree that taking them hostage seemed a bit extreme when some well timed blackmail might have done the trick. That said though it obviously suited various people's agendas to have the PM bumped off so I guess it spiralled a bit.

I'm actually a bit annoyed at BBC4 for having showed the last 3 episodes as a triple bill. Whilst I very much enjoyed sitting up with my wine on Saturday night watching it all, I suspect it would have seen a bit more realistic if they hadn't shown 3 week's worth of episodes in an hour and a bit. There was one point where it felt like they were all basically escaping and getting recaptured constantly. I have a feeling if you'd watched it in hour long episodes (with adverts) and a week's gap between episodes it would have felt a bit different.

Overall it was excellent though, I hope they get some more Israeli original shows.

Hygellig · 17/03/2015 13:27

I watched the last two episodes yesterday and found the ending very confusing and a bit of a let-down after the rest of the series (your summary has helped slightly, MsFanackerPants!)

So Yael realised that the stuff she had to put on her scalpel would not in fact kill the PM, but just make him look dead, as happened with the dog? In which case her previous objections vanished? Won't her surgical career still be ruined?

If they just wanted the PM's bone marrow (i.e. rather than objecting to his politics), could they have not blackmailed him with the video, and then got him to launch a campaign to encourage more bone marrow donors? He joins the register, saves a young mother's life, and his ratings go up. How did they know he would be a match anyway and what are they going to do with him now he's presumed dead?

EachandEveryone · 17/03/2015 13:33

I don't know! It's very confusing. The woman that took the money who's side was she on? Was it political for her? What about the grandad? What was he in it for his daughter in law or the politics? Who was the orthodox woman?

It was very confusing at the end.

Kefybaby · 18/03/2015 19:50

I loved the series. How refreshing. However I also thought there were a few holes in the end. The body switch seems to be a bit of a weak point. Surely someone would notice. Even if the family didn't see the body again, surely the funeral parlour would realise?! Either way, this was a series I really enjoyed!

SamG76 · 18/03/2015 20:57

There aren't any funeral parlours in Israel, at least for Jews, but also generally no coffins (except for soldiers and terrorist attack victims) so you would think the family might spot it!

Kefybaby · 18/03/2015 21:27

Yes - someone would have to look after the body and a PM is not exactly low profile or difficult to recognise.

MEgirl · 21/01/2016 23:05

It just says "soon". Wish they had said exactly when.
