Actually, our Cocker Spaniel snuggles up with one of the dc at night, the kids love it, he is their best and most loyal friend. A few germs never hurt anyone, infact it makes you stronger!
I didn't watch the programme, sitting her sobbing over Casualty instead....
FWIW, the family made the right decision, of course if our dog ever bit one of the children we would have to seriously reconsider its future...
But, with a firm hand and clear rules so far we are doing well, there is not a bad bone in our dogs' body (he is too dense for a start..)
As I said, I did not watch the programme, but I do know that due to Cocker Spaniels popularity, loads of incorrect breeding took place, resulting in dogs with bad temperament. It is currently happening in labs and retrievers too...
I can only assume that is what this dog's problem was... and in that case putting it to sleep was of course the right thing to do...
By the sounds of it, it was not an easy decision for the family to take
