OMG...missed it!!
What happened???

FredBassett · 17/10/2006 20:46

They had to put a gorgeous black cocker spaniel down as he mauled the families little girl - there was no way it could be rehomed or rehabilitated so they had it put down. It was inevitable but the dad was crying and the dog was wagging his tail as they got in the car to go to the vet etc... just upsetting really

glad i missed it now.
would have sobbed for the rest of the night
better to put dog down, than put a person in danger though.
still,

expatinscotland · 17/10/2006 20:50

I cried.

expatinscotland · 17/10/2006 20:50

When he dug his grave and laid him there all wrapped up, and his little black ear was sticking out of the sheet.

OMG!

I sobbed.

pooka · 17/10/2006 20:52

I cried and I'm scared of dogs. Felt so so sorry for the dad.

nutcracker · 17/10/2006 20:54

OMG, my dad was planning on watching this, and he has only recently had to have his dog put down. God i hope he missed it.

Gobbledispook · 17/10/2006 20:56

No I didn't sob at all. I thought the family were bloody stupid letting the dogs jump up at the table - the kids were frightened fgs, what the hell was up with the parents?!?!?!? And lying on their bed - oh barftastic.

Sad for the dog obviously but it was a bit of a no brainer wasn't it?! If a dog bit or mauled my child it might not have had such a peaceful ending!

peegeeweegeeWITCH · 17/10/2006 21:04

Actually, our Cocker Spaniel snuggles up with one of the dc at night, the kids love it, he is their best and most loyal friend. A few germs never hurt anyone, infact it makes you stronger!

I didn't watch the programme, sitting her sobbing over Casualty instead....

FWIW, the family made the right decision, of course if our dog ever bit one of the children we would have to seriously reconsider its future...
But, with a firm hand and clear rules so far we are doing well, there is not a bad bone in our dogs' body (he is too dense for a start..)

As I said, I did not watch the programme, but I do know that due to Cocker Spaniels popularity, loads of incorrect breeding took place, resulting in dogs with bad temperament. It is currently happening in labs and retrievers too...
I can only assume that is what this dog's problem was... and in that case putting it to sleep was of course the right thing to do...

By the sounds of it, it was not an easy decision for the family to take

They did say it was a probable neurological disorder. Their other dog responded really well to the training. The family were irresponsible as they did let the dogs believe they were in charge and gave them no discipline, just removed themselves or the dogs from the situation.
