Didn't see another thread about this. I just got round to watching it and I really enjoyed it.

In my mind Ashley Jensen was younger than the Agatha I envisioned but I thought she was superb.

James was also younger than I thought but it all worked really well.

Oh goodness, I couldn't disagree more.
I was looking forward to this but it was awful. There were about four funny moments, Ashley Jensen was preposterous and wholly unlikeable. Awful.
DS1 sat through it looking at me and saying 'what is this shit' . Having been the one to chose that as our viewing I ended up agreeing with him.

I could not even bring myself to watch it. Enjoyed the books, LOVED the radio version with Penelope Keith, but she is so firmly fixed in my head as Agatha, the trailers for the programme horrified me Hmm

badasahatter · 28/12/2014 17:27

I watched it. Wanted to hate it, as I had Agatha pegged from the books as solid, dark haired and bear eyed. Blonde women and glam didn't really do it for me. BUT....I think the story is quite strong and was watchable. More watchable than I thought it was gonna be, anyway...

James Lacey is a travesty though. He's way too young and looks like he walked off the front cover of Mens Health. He'
s just all wrong...

IDontDoIroning · 28/12/2014 17:37

She was too young slim and blonde. James Lacey was much too young as well.
The vicars wife was also too young.

I suppose overall it was ok but it could have been much better.

5Foot5 · 28/12/2014 20:45

Apart from Aggie and James being about ten years too young I thought they did it quite well. After all the books are silly and tongue in cheek so a light hearted crime romp was exactly what I was expecting. I wasn't disappointed

DesertIslandPenguin · 30/12/2014 19:18

I was a bit disappointed with the casting of Agatha, too, but it's telly...they can't have a frumpy leading lady, can they? Hmm DH is looking a bit askance at the spinach quiche in the fridge now, though.

clangermum · 01/01/2015 17:25

Are the books good? Keep eyeing them up in the kindle store and like getting into a series.

DesertIslandPenguin · 01/01/2015 22:05

They're okay, not great literary works of art. Agatha was much more annoying in the books than on tv but they're somehow addictive.

Thislittlekitten · 01/01/2015 23:32

They are really easy to read and I agree not amazing literary works but you somehow lose yourself in them and keep going back for more!

Agatha is more annoying in the book and snappy, but also more vulnerable.

If you get a chance, listen to the series they did on radio 4 with Penelope Keith, then read the books. Much more fun!

The books are lightweight, but good fun.

clangermum · 02/01/2015 10:47

It's a shame they're not in the Listen Again archive, although there's a box set available, but pricey. A few excerpts are on youtube. Sounds good.

I agree it's sometimes easier to listen first, rather than read and then listen if the characters sound different to the way they are in your head.

In similar vein, having watched Mapp and Lucia without having read or seen any other incarnations, I've now got the collection on kindle (ridiculously cheap too).

I have read almost all of them but I never buy them, I borrow them from the library. They are good light-hearted fun but definitely not great literary works! Nor are they the sort of book I am likely to want to keep re-reading, hence my policy of borrow rather than buy

Cherrypi · 02/01/2015 13:50

I really enjoyed it. I was annoyed with the casting of someone to young but loved it. Hope they make more.

clangermum · 02/01/2015 16:08

Good point 5Foot5 they are the kind of thing my library would probably have.

I'm trying to reduce the number of physical books I buy

Toooldtobearsed · 13/01/2015 07:44

ALERT ALERT ALERT

Radio 4 is currently broadcasting Agatha Raisin 'The Curious Curate'.

Listen to the real Agatha Grin
