I'm at about an hour in, and don't think I can watch another minute.

I liked it. There were some sad bits, but I loved the redemption of Avril.

I'm in the States so we haven't had the last season of Downton yet; it starts in January. But I am getting increasingly fed up with it, and if the previews are any indication, it appears that some serious shark jumping is in the offing.

IsabeauMichelle · 26/12/2014 16:08

I was a bit confused. At the end, older Jenny had the broken lamb from the nativity- but she wasn't there when all that happened Confused Am I being thick?

limitedperiodonly · 26/12/2014 16:11

Peter did pass his sergeant exams, which means they can have a garden - hurrah!

In Redbridge or Leytonstone. Both on the Central Line in 1959 and very respectable.

SirChenjin · 26/12/2014 16:21

But of course respectable - there are standards to be maintained Shock

And for anyone who doubts the importance of standards, I give you Comic Relief and Call the Midwife Grin

SenecaFalls · 26/12/2014 16:52

Now that was funny. Xmas Grin

Cynthia rescued it, said, "I know someone who would appreciate it" and presumed she was sending it to the childless couple.

As far as I know there are no plans to harm or take back Bany Angela (Angela Julienne, sob!)

I was hoping that Peter passing his exams means that they would piss off to Redbridge and out of the programme but I guess I won't be that lucky... Hmm

ShelaghTurner · 26/12/2014 17:49

*baby

breward · 26/12/2014 18:17

Thought Kacey Ainworths' acting last night, as Nancy, was amazing. Her facial expressions when she was told she would never have a baby were so pained and moving

IsabeauMichelle · 26/12/2014 18:21

Thank you Vivacia! That was bugging me all evening!

I agree about Kacey Ainsworth, she was outstanding last night.

SirChenjin · 26/12/2014 18:24

I agree breward - when she said that she didn't want to go into hospital because the doctors hadn't been kind, and then described what they had done to her Sad

One of my colleagues used to work (many years ago) in what had been an asylum. Some of the residents had been there since they were young women, and they were put in there for all sorts of spurious reasons - by the time these places were being closed down these women were institutionalised and incapable of looking after themselves Sad

honeysucklejasmine · 26/12/2014 18:29

Can someone remind me where Jenny went? I have totally forgotten. Confused

5ChildrenAndIt · 26/12/2014 18:45

She went back to general nursing.

honeysucklejasmine · 26/12/2014 18:50

Thank you.

I haven't read much about the topic, but from what I do remember they seemed a very handy way of men dealing with troublesome female relatives. There's a bit in the Jolie film, Changeling. Just too chilling to watch Sad.

I really enjoyed it.

Hulababy · 26/12/2014 20:02

I really enjoyed it!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/12/2014 00:37

I've just watched - I spent the whole time thinking something awful was going to happen to Sister Evangelina with all that talk about her indigestion.

Not the most cheerful episode, although Cynthia leaving as if she were getting married was lovely.

The song at the end was lovely too, I'd never heard it before. That's one of my favourite things about it, the music. And the clothes actually.

FabulousFudge · 28/12/2014 01:04

I really enjoyed it too. Kacey Ainsworth is a fabulous actress, as is the girl who played Avril.

2old2beamum · 28/12/2014 16:19

My biggest criticism was that the poor girl going to the "home" said Social worker had said she need not see the baby. Sorry no social worker in those days it was an almoner!!
I worked with these nuns in 1963 as a student nurse!!

pumpkinsweetie · 28/12/2014 16:26

Was the highlight of Christmas Tv, wonderful show & brilliant acting Smile

Thumbnutstwitchingonanopenfire · 28/12/2014 16:35

I shouldn't have read this really, I've still got to watch Series 3 on DVD (Christmas present!) Xmas Smile

Have any of you read the books? I read the first book, it's what inspired me to watch the series (I'm in Australia, and don't have pay tv, so had to watch it on DVD from the off) - I still think the workhouse story was the absolute saddest thing I've read for a long time. It's worse in the book than on the tv show, too.

SirChenjin · 28/12/2014 18:04

I read the first book - didn't know she had written others, I must try and get them. Agree that the workhouse story was far, far worse in the book - they were utterly barbaric places and not so long ago either Sad Sad

ShelaghTurner · 28/12/2014 20:23

Yes read all of the books, they were what made me watch the series when it started. And today I've just downloaded a book about the order of nuns themselves. I am stupidly excited about this!

Clawdy · 29/12/2014 15:11

Some parts of the mother and baby home scenario were very realistic - I worked with someone who gave birth in a Manchester home, in the late 1950s - she said she had seen girls run screaming down the drive after the car carrying off their baby Sad
