I was wondering how James got through immigration BringMeTea too because he does have a criminal record for two assaults.
The assaults were bar brawls and look like a combination of his short temper, dimness and alcohol. It was probably lucky for Roisin and the prggramme that he wasn't drinking at the county show, because he was getting angry with her sensible and calm advice. He's stupid and arrogant, which combined with alcohol, is explosive. It was a little scary to watch. He did it with Bianca on a previous episode, but again, that was in the kitchen over nothing stronger than a cup of coffee.
Anyway, US Immigration can waive a criminal record, and I suppose they did because it was the BBC asking which probably helps.
But then again, it's just occurred to me that James didn't disclose it and decided to wing it. It's a distinct possibility after his last performance of hiding his blunder for the morale of his team
.
I was shouting at the screen during that episode.
The contestants must have known they were going to NYC because I'm sure that would have been classed as work and they'd have needed a visa. It's a limited permit that doesn't entitle you to work in the US, but makes it legal for you to work on something that's for your own country. You need to attend a short interview.
I can't believe the BBC wouldn't know that and go through the proper process. If you don't do it and are found out, they arrest you, hold you in a cell and deport you on the next flight. It's happened to friends of mine who made a genuine mistake because it's a bit confusing and thought it would be okay to own up at Immigration and perhaps pay a penalty for not following the rules.
Big mistake. Nearly 24 hours in solitary confinement with a steel toilet, a bottle of water and a sandwich that was still frozen. And, of course, they were billed for the flight.
They can ban you for good. If I'd have had that treatment though, I'd never want to set foot in that country again.
I was shouting about that and DH was looking at me like: 'I've heard that story so many times. It's boring. Will you shut up?' You, of course, have not heard it.
