I'm sitting here in absolute shock after watching this documentaryShock Sad

It was about addicts in China where things have got so out of control that teens are going into rehab.

Get the tissues ready if you watch it, it's such a good programme but my God is heart wrenchingSad

I saw it. I found it quite difficult to watch.

Those poor childrenSad

Thank goodness the nurses and doctors were kind,I don't think I'd have been able to watch otherwise.

Odd that none of the parents took the computer away though before they got to that point. It really was a total break down in communication between parents and children. So sad.

Is there a similar addiction levels here in the UK, if indeed it could be called an addiction?

Is it because the Chinese authorities are not that great with the 'Net' in general and are trying to discourage people using it for anything other than necessary business, afraid they might discover things they'd sooner keep the lid on?

Is there something specific with society that motivates their young people to escape so extremely into this gaming world?

If I have that many questions unanswered, then perhaps the documentary isn't that good?

It reminded me of a documentary (much better one) a few months ago about the declining birth rate in Japan. Anyone?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/09/2014 14:53

Do they discourage use of the net? I thought it was the complete opposite.

And yes there are similar levels of addiction in the UK apparently, there was a programme on fairly recently. Ultimately the same reasons, total break down in communication with parents and retreating into virtual world.

The Chinese authorities are very wary of, and feel threatened by what people might be looking at on the net and what ideas they might be picking up. Therefore it's censored and controlled to a high degree, but as always, clever people can circumnavigate these controls. Which the authorities are aware of.

Ultimately they don't want people picking up a 'western world view' if you know what I mean? This might well lead to questioning their leaders and the legitimacy of the autocracy they live under.
I think for those reasons they not quite as comfortable with it as say we are here in the west.
