Is it just me or do you hate TV chefs.

OK I love cookery programmes but I seem to hate all TV chefs.

Either too stuck up- Nigella & Hugh or thick as two short planks- Worral- Thomson & John Todore, irritating and condescending - Ina Garten & ainsley Harriet.

I shout at the TV when they are on, I find them all so grating.
Am I alone?

I hate the fact that because they have to look glamorous for tv they throw away all health and hygiene rules.

long hair not tied back (Nigella) and going into food.

no one wearing sweatbands round heads or chefs hats so sweat drippin ginto food.

tasting food with spoon then putting same spoon back into pot (I have OCD if you think Im going too far here!)

talking and spittling into food.......(Jamie Oliver).

Gino D'Campo gives me the rage. I shout at the telly when he's on.

I like Simon Rimmer and James Martin.

Everyone else and especially the GBBO pair. Meh.

CatKisser · 14/09/2014 17:49

Some I hate Gino, Jamie but some I love - Michel, Monica. And I LOVE Hugh and his rural cooking. I wish River Cottage was back on.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2014 17:52

I have never ever bought a book or made anything on the back of seeing a chef cook something on TV. i usually watch while marvelling at what a faff it all is and how the 'storecupboard ingredients' are never mine. Grin

CatKisser · 14/09/2014 17:56

Sparkling I find Nigel Slater the worst for that.
"Just take out your leftover oak smoked salmon and hand crafted ricotta...."

I DO love watching chefs cook though and it does genuinely inspire me with my own cooking. I really do wish I had others to cook for sometimes.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2014 18:17

Grin Cat it's just like that! I sometimes have something a bit like what they mean but not really. Then they say 'you can get this is some shops' usually meaning some poncey Deli in Central London. Grin

Ah, at least Heston looks well scrubbed (if a bit batty) Wink

zipzap · 14/09/2014 20:27

At least with Heston there's no pretence that you're going to try to make the food - it's pure entertainment and enjoyment of watching somebody that is so bonkers about his subject with the skill, ability and creativity and tv budget to go for it and be so completely OTT in doing so.

Yup hate them all.

It's cooking for fucks sake. Everyone does it every day.

When did it become fetishised??

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/09/2014 20:33

I like some TV chefs. I however struggle to watch someone use three bog standard ingredients then do something really plain with them then talk nonsense about how tasty it is. Seriously there can't be that much flavour in it. And what's with all the butter do things need to be dripping with butter or smothered in lard to be tasty cos really it looks a greasy mess. Beef plus flour plus beer in bought pastry case does not a pie make.

Nothing wrong with the pastry by the way but even good meat needs something more added to it to make it pie worthy

Bunbaker · 14/09/2014 20:53

I don't hate them. I have been inspired by many chefs, even so far as to go to Corfu on holiday after watching Rick Stein's Mediterranean Odyssey.

I like watching Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, and regularly make his mixed mushroom tart recipe. I have a couple of Jamie Oliver books, a Nigella book, a Gok Wan book, three Delia books, a Hairy Bikers book, Mary Berry's Baking Bible, a couple of Nigel Slater books and a GBBO book amongst others.

If you don't like cookery shows don't watch them - I don't like sport so I don't watch it.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/09/2014 20:55

Ah but I love cookery shows I'm strangely addicted to themBlush I use many ideas

Just sometimes I can't help but think that there's too much grease or some things a bit strange Grin

combust22 · 15/09/2014 08:00

I watch them beacuse I love food. I adore Jamie's recipes but can't stand the arrogant little prick. Heston gets my goat. I am a chemistry graduate so can't help but find holes and flaws in all his showmanship.

Mrsjayy · 15/09/2014 10:14

I had to stop watching cookery programme s it just gets too much nigel slater and his little brown packets of butter sent me over the edge.

ppeatfruit · 15/09/2014 17:04

Some are ridiculous like Heston B. I mean WTF?? How to make perfectly good food into a copy of perfectly good food WHY ????

But I like Hugh FW as well he has no side to him and he makes you think about how our food is produced!

Jamie Oliver and his chilli fetish !! I've never seen him make a meal without effing chilli (can you tell I HATE chilli!!!!).

I like Delia and sort of like Nigella but she's very OTT ( I mean the going to the fridge at midnight thing ) I'd keep that habit a secret IIWM!!

Pathetica · 23/09/2014 22:08

American here - Two words - Guy Fieti - Now you may stop complaining. Oh and please revolve Gordon Ramsey and Curtis Stone's passports.
