The DDs have got really into this over the holidays and I just don't get it.

I'm a geek, married to a geek, who has spent large amounts of time surrounded by other geeks and non.of them were that one dimensional and stupid.

Oh and they had far better hair, beards and eccentric dress sense, big bang is really tame.

I think the thing that makes TBBT so appealing to many is the characterisation and the development of the relationships between them.

I love how, for example, Howard was such a slimy weasel and then met Bernadette and became a much nicer person. He IMO has many of the best lines and his comic timing and deadpan delivery is hilarious.

The whole bromance thing between Raj and Howard, and Leonard and Sheldon's relationships with their mothers is just very funny.

I think ongoing sitcoms with many series can lose their freshness, it must be hard to keep it funny and original.

I think the first series was more genuinely geeky, with Age of Conan episodes etc.

However, it was less funny for people who were not geeks and the episodes were more hit and miss. As the writing has progressed I think it is losing touch with the geekiness and is now becoming Friends with a comic book store.

Sheldon makes it. It wouldn't be anywhere near as funny without him.

Sheldon makes it, but it's also an ensemble. You couldn't subtract anyone and make it work, I think, including the newer characters.

I think that's right Sidge.
It's about the way all 7 (now) of the main characters have developed, and the way the friendships show through without being smultczy (I might have made that word up)

The women are superb. I like their characters better than the men. Agree, without Sheldon it would struggle but I could take or leave the other three men. Apparently Amy is a science boff in real life so I like to think that some of it is based in fact!

My favourite Sheldon quote (not word perfect) -
You tell people I'm a ROCKET SCIENTIST?? I'm a THEORETICAL PHYSICIST fgs!! You might as well tell them I'm a toll-taker at the Golden Gate Bridge!!

It's no more one dimensional than friends or any other US sitcom, and I find it funnier.
You don't laugh "at" Sheldon as such because in most interactions he's the one with the power. The room mate agreement he makes Leonard sign is hysterical. And his "spot". Best to watch some season 1 to understand how it developed. Watching now is a bit like first watching friends after Monica and chandler married and Rachel has a baby.
