What to watch next? If I love The Good Wife, True Detective, OITNB

We don't have a TV but use Netflix and various illegal websites to stream programmes. At a loss at the moment about what to watch next. I love The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie, Orange is the New Black, most BBC good quality drama mini-series etc. DH loved True Detective (which I enjoyed too), The Wire, The Shield. Gosh, it sounds like we're hooked on US programmes, which isn't true at all. We both love really good British stuff, older stuff like Foyle's War, House of Cards (have seen new one too), newer things like The Fall.
Anyone got any suggestions?

I quite like the dark! I have been a bit frustrated with the women side of it but found a glimmer of hope in the reporter briefly!

In some ways I'm happy there's another series of homeland as I bloody love it. But I really don't know where they can go with it now. I'll stop there so as not to spoil!

Justified - very cool and Raylan Givens is hotness in a cowboy hat

Onedropoflove · 28/08/2014 00:01

The Sopranos. Six Feet Under.

itstheyearzero · 28/08/2014 00:03

The Killing is extremely good

Onedropoflove · 28/08/2014 00:05

Parenthood if you can get American Netflix

Deux · 28/08/2014 00:22

I like your choices OP. I'm in lust with Mathew McConnaughey since watching True Detective .

Top of the lake was fab. Great acting and quite dark. So another vote for it.

Did you watch Happy Valley? It was on UK terrestrial TV recently but don't remember which channel. It was quite edge of your seat stuff. One episode I screamed out loud and hid behing a cushion panting.

I'll be taking notes. I totally love Netflix to the extent we're thinking of getting rid of Sky.

Southland is brilliant

gamescompendium · 28/08/2014 01:25

Borgen, The Honourable Woman, Nashville (v trashy but in a good way)?

tribpot · 29/08/2014 09:40

Ooh yes. Nashville is fantastic. I'm watching the first series of Borgen now - brilliant but I usually knit whilst watching TV so have to choose something easy to do in order to be able to watch the subtitles :)

HeadfirstForHalos · 29/08/2014 14:47

Luther is good. We're currently watching Six Feet Under, totally not what I expected after watching Dexter (also a good show) but it's brilliant. I know everyone says it but Breaking Bad is fantastic, it lives up to the hype.

DH has just bought the box set of Twin Peaks, we will start watching that soon, I've never seen it but heard good things about it.

HeadfirstForHalos · 29/08/2014 14:48

Ooh, we recently watched Broadchurch too, we watched it over a long weekend, can't wait for the next series.

tribpot · 29/08/2014 23:17

Started Damages tonight on Netflix - good stuff! Thanks for the recommendation, NeedaDiscoNap.

Onedropoflove · 30/08/2014 06:18

Damages is great but the second season not so.

TheSameBoat · 30/08/2014 06:41

Um, how do you get American Netflix? or is that verboten?

itstheyearzero · 30/08/2014 08:38

SameBoat you need to make Netflix think you are in the US by changing the IP address on the device you are using. If you Google it you will find a number of ways to do it for free but they tend to stop working after a few weeks. I use a company called Unblock Us. It costs about £2 a month on top of what you pay to Netflix but its a great service. I've been using it for months now with no problems. I used it initially so I could watch Mad Men.

Scandal- defintely keep going for a few episodes before deciding whether you like it.
Luther- brilliant show with added bonus of the fabulous Idris Elba!
Sons of Anarchy- one of the best shows we've ever watched. First 5 seasons available on Amazon Prime/Netflix with the 6th on Amazon instant for £20 not that I'm considering paying it for a new fix of Charlie Hunnam, oh no!

itstheyearzero · 30/08/2014 08:52

Yeah I started with Scandal but I gave up. It just seemed tacky and unbelievable. Maybe I'll give it another go after I have finished The Killing

PoppyAmex · 30/08/2014 08:54

I liked all the shows you mentioned and am currently binge-watching Sons of Anarchy on Netflix 9 month old wakes up every 20ms and am really enjoying it.

TheSameBoat · 30/08/2014 10:48

Thanks yearzero, I'll give it a go, only I hear there are more seasons of Modern Family on the American one.

Nancy66 · 30/08/2014 13:41

I've just given up with Scandal. Got silly and they all talked too bloody quickly.

Onedropoflove · 30/08/2014 18:25

Yes i gave up after season one and Greys Anatomy was exactly the same they just spout loads of self indulgent bs ten to a dozen. No-one speaks like that in real life, it don't know why the writer insists upon it.
