What's the best documentary you've ever watched? I'm running out of programmes to watch and hoping MN will inspire me.

Things I like are medical stuff, social issues, adventure stories, stories about people. If anyone has any recommendations please post, links too if you have them.

I watched Blackfish recently it's very good but quite sad.

Whitershadeofpale · 12/05/2014 19:38

The imposter
Sicko
Bowling for columbine
Grey gardens
Aileen Wurnous-life and death of a serial killer

buddhasbelly · 12/05/2014 19:39

qazc I was going to suggest that too so another vote for blackfish. Another suggestion www.vice.com/the-vice-guide-to-travel/vice-guide-to-north-korea-1-of-3 the vice guide to north korea gives an insight into north korea (albeit from an american who is slightly annoying) - will be watching this thread for more suggestions as currently with a 5 week old baby and could do with some suggestions myself!

Whitershadeofpale · 12/05/2014 19:41

The up series is very good to and on YouTube.

GeneParmesan · 12/05/2014 19:43

The King of Kong. It's about a man trying to break the highest score for the Donkey Kong arcade game, bear with me, some of the people in it are unbelievable characters. It has some quite funny moments.

buddhasbelly · 12/05/2014 19:45

Gene I am gripped already!

The Tribe series

true life story films:

Into the wild
Touching the void

Pagwatch · 12/05/2014 20:11

Senna
The Falling Man
Man on a Wire
Searching for sugarman.

Agree with Touching the void too.

ThatBloodyWoman · 12/05/2014 20:11

Garbage Warrior -eco builder using 'rubbish' as materials.

Cocolepew · 12/05/2014 20:15

The one with a camera trained on the golden gate bridge, think it might be called The Bridge. A bit voyeuristic but incredibly sad. It's there to film the people jumping of it.

Supersize Me
Anything by Michael Moore
Catfish

ThatBloodyWoman · 12/05/2014 20:17

Grizzly Man

ThatBloodyWoman · 12/05/2014 20:19

I wish I could see that Horizon documentary on Wild Swimming again.I had it recorded but it was deleted.
I love my documentaries...

Misslaughalot · 12/05/2014 20:19

Man on Wire is great.
Exit through the Giftshop is good too.

ThatBloodyWoman · 12/05/2014 20:23

Anyone see that free climbing one?
Was it 'Don't look down' ?

It was brilliant.

Also,'the golden age of dogging' (I think it was called) caused quite a stir on here Wink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/05/2014 20:24

Yes, that was great!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/05/2014 20:25

Grey Gardens is good.

KippyVonKipperson · 12/05/2014 23:07

Thanks everyone, there are so many suggestions here, wow, plenty to keep me occupied. When I wrote my OP I was thinking more along the lines of TV documentaries but the film suggestions look good so I'm going to check them out. Feel free to keep posting, I'll reciprocate with a list of my favourites too.

If you like dancing and have Netflix I recommend:
First Position - kids' ballet competition
Every Little Step - about "A Chorus Line" and auditions for the 2008 revival

KippyVonKipperson · 13/05/2014 20:39

I totally agree with Touching the void - loved this one, has to be one of the best docs I’ve ever seen, also liked supersize me too, and have seen the catfish tv show, some of the stories on there are so odd

As promised, in return for all your suggestions here are some others I like, in case any of you are similar to me in your tastes! I haven’t checked all the links work though, but hopefully if not a quick google will find them. Apologies that it's a mammoth post....

There was one I watched about Surrogacy in India, not sure of the name but was good, it was a doctor who ran this service and the bit I remember is her chatting on her mobile while performing a c-section. Someone here might remember the name.

There was one about the Moulin Rouge show & the women who danced for it in Paris too, but I only saw a little bit and I can't remember what it was called, if anyone remembers I'd like to watch the whole thing

I'd vote for When We Were Kings. Don't be put off by the fact it's about boxing- specifically the Rumble in the Jungle. It's about so much more

treaclesoda · 13/05/2014 20:50

Project Nim. I think that's what it's called. It's about this 1970s experiment to see if it was possible to raise a monkey with a human family and teach him to communicate. It's very very good and very sad.
