what a lovely programme! We sat and talked and worried about how DS1 will cope!

Jimjams2 · 22/08/2006 22:11

I'm rather concerned about ds2's complete inability to change himself (ds3 19 months can practically get himself dressed but ds2 struggles). 2 weeks to practice buttoning shirts!

futurity · 22/08/2006 22:12

Me to Jimjams2...I will keep an eye on DS1 dressing and undressing over the next two weeks. I think he is alright at it..apart from socks...and probably buttons!

Jimjams2 · 22/08/2006 22:16

sounds better than ds2, honestly he is hopeless!

alexsmilitantmum · 22/08/2006 22:16

felt very choked watching this.felt indignant for issac when he was punished for biting because the other boy had been pushing him repeatedly.
was a bit at the 'i'm going to have sex with you' comments but thought the teacher handled it very well.

i am really worried because ds2 is supposed to start school next september-2 weeks after his 4th birthday.after watching this programme i'm even more sure that he won't be ready.

Tommy · 22/08/2006 22:19

alot can happen in a year Alexsmum - my DS2 will start next year at same age and he can't even pull his pants up yet - he needs to learn by 18th Sept before he starts nursery!

southeastastra · 22/08/2006 22:19

i felt my son was nowhere near ready, but it's amazing what he has achieved in reception. i suppose i 'babied' him quite a bit but he has gained so much from it. i seriously didn't want him to go so early but glad he seems happy now. he is only just 5 too.

I caught the last 15 mins of this programme. wish I'd seen it all. DS1 starts school in 2 weeks as well. gulp. hope they repeat it

Maddison · 22/08/2006 22:29

Damn I missed it. Meant to sky+ it but forgot

Suppose I'll just have to keep an eye out for it coming on again (I hope)

Tommy · 22/08/2006 22:50

maybe it will be on E4 or somewhere like that later in the week?

Maddison · 22/08/2006 22:56

Thanks Tommy, I'll look out for it

I was filling up all the way through this. My ds starts reception in September and they just all looked so young. I really felt for Isaac when he had to go to the Head teacher and he was being so brave. Didn't you just want to hug him? It's amazing to think that my ds will be doing those things in a few weeks.......

It looked a fab school though and the teachers and assistants were fab.

Northerner · 23/08/2006 09:54

And yes I remember my reception teacher too.

oliveoil · 23/08/2006 09:54

I was filling up too, thought the boy with the glasses was very clever and articulate for so young.

Aren't boys boistrous (sp??), so different to girls.

And Grace with no friends, all upset .

charliecat · 23/08/2006 09:56

Cat34 I wondered where the other 30 kids were while she was doing the talking as well

roisin · 23/08/2006 10:06

Does anyone know when it will be repeated? I've been looking out for it in the listings, but can't find it anywhere.

I missed it

gladbag · 23/08/2006 10:16

I used to do all those sort of chats during playtime, lunchtime, assemblies, when the TA was reading a story - anytime I could manage to pull the kids I needed for a couple of minutes. I thought the Reception teacher was really fantastic. And I loved the fact that they focused on the social aspect of starting school rather than the academic.

Philly · 23/08/2006 10:34

What was really wonderful was seeing how they all progressed and seeing how Issac's personality started to come through once his confidence rose. What a skill to be able to bring a child on like that.Loved the bit where he told the film crew that they could stay and talk to the Head teacher if they liked and also when he had the confidence to explain to Dylan that he didn't choose him because he sometimes didn't like the fighting.

Personally i was really impressed with the way that the teacher didn't label Dylan as naughty ,he reminded me so much of ds3 who starts next term, and I am so anxious that because he comes accross as big and boisterious (partly to do with being third boy)he will be labeled as naughty and I thought the teacher was fantastic at bringing out his softer side ,I so hope that ds3's teacher will be able to see that with him.

prettybird · 23/08/2006 16:24

Waswondering - I was about to post excatly the same thing! Wasn't able to watch the porgramme as i was watching "Accused" on BBC2 - will it be repeated.

The other beuty about the Scottish system is that if your child isn;t 5 when school starts, you can keep them back and they will just start P1 a year later.

As I understadn it, in England (at least in some places), if you think your child is not ready and hold them back until they've turned 5, all they do when they start school is put them in the class they would have been in anyway, which somewaht seems to defeat the purpose!

Northerner · 23/08/2006 16:42

Yes Philly my ds is rather boistourous and full of bravado in public. Can sometimes come accross as naughty, but of course I get to see the beautiful, caring, inquisitive side of him. I hope his school can bring that out in him too. Don't want him to be labelled.

tamum · 23/08/2006 16:49

Waswondering and prettybird- I had exactly the same thought. They all seemed so much younger than most of the P1s up here. It was a lovely program though, and the teacher was fab.

noseymum · 23/08/2006 22:55

I definately remember my first Teacher. (She was lovely)

Wanted to try out lo's uniform to see if it all fitted ok yesterday. He looked grown up, but I'm still a bit worried about him changing for PE. He does dress himself sometimes, but he's a bit lazy. As someone else said, when I'm in a hurry, I tend to do it for him.

Also worried about him wiping his bum if he has to have a poo! He does try bless him, but like today for example he got it all over his bum cheek. He also insists on removing his trousers and pants and can't always get them back on.
