I am ridiculolusly excited that the BBC will be showing a new remake of this later this month.

I first read the book when I was about 13, and have re-read it countless times since, I watched the TV Series with Mary Crosby as Mary Yellan, I have the black and white movie version, and I've also been to Jamaica Inn itself.

Now this new version with Jessica Brown Findlay as Mary, and I can't wait!

I was wondering what I'd do when this current series of Shetland finishes this Tuesday, and now I've got this to look forward to Smile

Ooooh, how exciting .... can someone update this thread nearer the time to remind me? Grin. LOVED reading Jamaica Inn as a teen. I visited the real one once and was a bit disappointed, although the museum was excellent. There's an inn near where I live which is much more Jamaica Inn-ish than the real thing IMO. Wonder where this is filmed.

Pixel · 13/04/2014 21:21

I read in the paper that cornish people are upset because most of it was filmed in Yorkshire.

I'm looking forward to it too. Loved the book, still got my copy somewhere which I bought during a caravan holiday with my parents as a teenager. It's stamped inside 'purchased at Jamaica Inn'. I was very impressed by that at the time Hmm.

shakethetree · 13/04/2014 21:28

Oh thank you for this - < excited >

GoldenGytha · 14/04/2014 15:51

Love, love, love Jamaica Inn!

Am so excited for it to start Smile

TypicalLibra I really enjoyed visiting the real Inn, and the museum is fantastic, XH thought I was making it up about it being a real place, though he hadn't heard of the book (Uneducated Oik!)

I live very near where it was filmed in Cumbria. Watching the filming was fascinating. The detail that went into the setting was incredible. I know a few people who were extras too so can't wait to watch it. Seeing the filming inspired me to read the book which I loved. Hadn't realised it was on so soon. Am going to attempt to upload a photo of the set.

The wooden cabin in the photo was built to hide the pay and display machine!

Lighthousekeeping · 14/04/2014 20:57

I cannot wait. Marking place.

ParkingFred · 14/04/2014 21:00

I can't wait! I just loved all of Daphne Du Maurier's books as a teen.

colleysmill · 14/04/2014 22:37

This is my favourite book ever - I really hope they stay true to it -or I will be really cross

Ive also been to Jamaica Inn and the scariest thing there was my sister doing her sinister face for the camera Grin

susiedaisy · 15/04/2014 10:28

Marking my place looking forward to this.

CambridgeBlue · 15/04/2014 10:31

Really looking forward to this, one of my favourite books. We visited the real inn a few years back on a bleak rainy day, it was very atmospheric!

NigellasGuest · 15/04/2014 10:42

I'm looking forward to this now - and I do like Jessica B-F.
But what was the reason for not actually filming in Cornwall? Perhaps it was accessibility (lack of). It takes ages to get down there!

Pixel · 15/04/2014 20:19

Apparently there were claims Cornwall is 'overdeveloped' (they did film exterior shots there). Looks like the decision also came down to money. Found this quote but was on Mail website so in order to head off the cries of anguish at having to click on it...

Dame Daphne’s son Kits Browning, who fiercely guards his mother’s literary legacy, concedes that the author might well have been ‘a little disappointed’ with the decision to film in Yorkshire.

‘The county meant everything to my mother. It was her sanctuary and also her inspiration,’ he said.

But he added that he was relieved the production otherwise ‘stayed loyal to the book’, saying: ‘I honestly believe the worldwide audience will be carried away with the story, rather than where it was shot.’

Mr Browning said the decision to base the production in the North had been taken because of a grant – said to be £500,000 – from Screen Yorkshire.

‘Perhaps we ought to ask where Cornwall was when the money was needed,’ he asked.

Anyway it sounds as if colleysmill won't have to be 'really cross' after all Smile.

It got a shining review on radio 4 tonight.

TulipOHare · 16/04/2014 12:22

Marking place, loved the book. Did not know they'd made a TV version, how ace!

GoldenGytha · 16/04/2014 13:53

I watched a TV version years ago with Mary Crosby as Mary Yellan and Trevor Eve as Jem Merlyn, I had already read the book, and I remember the series as being very good,

I have a paper copy of the book, have it on my Kindle, and fulfilled a dream when I visited the real Jamaica Inn,

I only knew about the new series when I saw the book with Jessica Brown Findley on the cover, in WH Smith a few weeks ago.

Can't wait for Monday!

I haven't read the book yet. Will I spoil it for myself if I watch the drama first?

OnlyLovers · 20/04/2014 19:02

Marking place. Haven't read it and know next to nothing about it, but it sounds A - MA - ZING.

SteadyEddie · 21/04/2014 09:42
