Moving from Cbeebies to CBBC

DS (who was 5 in June) seems to find much of CBeebies boring now but CBBC seems perhaps a bit too grown up for him. What do other children of his age watch please?

He doesn't watch a huge amount of TV but I'd rather not go for the channels with adverts on if possible.

My Ds started to get into the cartoons on Boomarang at around that age.

Unfortunately ds (6 next month) discovered CiTV despite my best effrots.

Having said that, he does seem to like even the "more grown-up" prgrammes on CBBC - and he does still sneak back to Cbeebies occasionally!

And there are amazing number so programmes on "adult" TV he likes: football, mastermind, cooking programmes, and , of course Simposons on C4.

We do now have to ignore the entreaties to "get" something he has seen advertsied during the break - but since it is always a blanket "no", he's giving up asking!

They/we have to learn to deal with commercialism at some point: the ads on the back cover of the Docotr WHo magazine are as much a nuisance for us as the TV ads.

My 6 yo likes Cbbc, and 4 yo likes some programmes. They both like Raven (think Dd2 would like to join in!).Dd1 love Blue Peter and the factual shows though she sometimes asks for Tracy Beaker (I'm not sure about this being too old though.)

southeastastra · 15/08/2006 22:02

what about nickjnr

anniebear · 20/08/2006 20:08

yes, my little girls who is nearly 5 will watch Nick J or Disney playhouse

Cappuccino · 20/08/2006 20:15

dd (nearly 6) thinks she still likes cbeebies though whenever it is on she's bored and wanders off

tho she will stay still for Tweenies and Lazytown, which she loves

however whenever she turns on CBBC it's usually some magazine type programme and she does like a narrative; she has flirted with Tracy Beaker for quite a while

Dd 5 and ds 7 like to watch POP, think it is 619 on sky. A mix of okay programmes and crap programmes. Oh just seen you don't want adverts, sorry. Mind you I have told ds and dd that adverts make things look better than they really are, so now they sit there saying things like "Bet that xxxx isn't nearly as good as it looks on the advert"

Barbie7 · 20/08/2006 20:46

I'm going through the same thing with my son who is 6. He is bored with Cbeebies but I can't be bothered with programmes with adverts. Even the content of the cartoons on CBBC seem hair raising. And vampires? What's that about. I used to trust Cbeebies. Now I have to vet the childrens viewing. It's not fair!

bobsmum · 20/08/2006 20:46

I read some blurb somewhere on the BBc website that they're trying to increase the viewing age of Cbeebies over the next year or so to include up to 6 year olds. Hence the introduction of Charlie and Lola and Lazytown. If I find it I'll link to it - it was in their annual review or something.

Anyway. it means that their programming will gradually change a bit. It was mainly about the fact that CBBC was too old and trendy for the 5/6 yr old audience and there was an obvious gap of early primary age children not being catered for. I think they're right.

bobsmum · 20/08/2006 20:53

Here we are - theis is from the BBc Charter Review:

"All children's output including radio, online and learning will eventually be consolidated under the CBeebies and CBBC brands which will be given tighter audiences targets ? up to 6 and 7 to 11 years respectively."

Cappuccino · 20/08/2006 21:09

y'know Bobsmum that's really interesting

me and dh always said we thought Lazytown was more CBBC

so that makes sense

anniebear · 21/08/2006 07:46

Yes I noticed in the mornings my DD who didn't really want c beebies on (But her twin sisiet who has SN does) has started wanting it on again

Because of Lazy Town . I can't stand it lol

But you don't seem to put C Beebies on at 7.30 and have any good programmes on for the younger ones

My Other DD would want to watch tweenies, Fimbles ets still when she gets up

All fun as you can imagine lol
