Oh my. I just watched this fabulous BBC adaptation on Netflix, I think it's from 2005 or thereabouts. Four parts. I can't believe I missed it first time round, what was I thinking?
The acting, script and romance are all superb, and there's even a Bennett-esque spoiled sister for comedy value.
Very odd seeing my gorgeous Edinburgh used to represent a miserable industrial city, but fun spotting locations.
Anna Maxwell Martin is young and wonderful in it, R Armitage is dour, brooding and hot as fuck, and Brendan Coyle aka murdering butler Bates from Downton does his proud union man schtick, and makes a convincing striking mill hand despite having clearly eaten many pies.
Not totally sure about Daniela Denby Ashe as Margaret, I had unwanted yet persistent catty thoughts every time the script mentioned her goddess-like beauty. Maybe others can see it? I'd have rather seen Anna MM in the lead role I think, she isn't beautiful but has bone melting charisma.
Sinead Cusack plays the future MIL for hell with relish, her voice actually scared me. In fact when the inevitable romantic happy ending came, my first thought was OMG you're marrying into THAT?!
Anybody else see this at the time, or watched it recently? I can't recommend it enough.
