Did anyone else watch this? It was humorous, and I did smile at some of the observations. But the scene where one of the female characters tried to take advantage of a passed out drunk male, I found extremely dodgy.

There was a thread about this on New Years Day. I agree with everyone else that it is shocking this was somehow thought to be funny by the writers, and that the producers or editors or the people that pick the programmes to put out, actually broadcast it.

2rebecca · 02/01/2014 20:57

I thought it was excellent, maybe it's a north south /England Scotland thing. Daniela Nardini was brilliant. Abigail's Party with a Scottish twist

2rebecca · 02/01/2014 21:01

I also can't see any old threads on this programme, I looked for one yesterday and didn't see it. Whingeing about non-existent ex-threads is a bit sad.

UhOhChongo · 02/01/2014 21:31

I did enjoy it in the main, and Daniela Nardini was a revelation to me in a comedic role, but.... that scene was dodgy, inappropriate and unnecessary.

I'm actually glad I felt shocked by it as I don't want to become numbed and desensitised to such things.

I missed part of that scene as went out and just returned when the rellies were banging on the door.
TV is full of unnecessary dodgy scenes when men sexually abuse women though and people don't complain. Am rewatching game of thrones S1 with my eldest who comments that the TV series has far more gratuitous sex scenes than the book does.
Daniela N was gorgeous in This Life and it's great to see her willing to portray a bad hairdo auntie.

I don't think it's any answer to portray women doing something similar as comedy.

2rebecca Two Doors Down Thread from the other day Why on earth would you think I'd made that up Confused ?
Wasn't whingeing either, just thought OP might like some more views, so I thought I'd mention it had already been discussed - what an odd reply

I have to say I was really looking forward to it, and thought it was building up quite nicely in the first half hour, but, like you, got called out and watched the last 25mins or so yesterday, and felt very uncomfortable with what was portrayed. Yes, there are worse scenes on some TV shows - in the context of a gritty drama maybe, but this was portrayed as 'light drama' - a bit of easy watching, even suggested it was supposed to be a comedy - and that's not what I want to see in such a programme, and I'm clearly not the only one from the comments on the "non-existent ex thread" Hmm

2rebecca · 02/01/2014 23:59

If it's discussed on a different forum then it seemed sensible to mention where it is at the time you first posted, rather than sound as though you are telling the OP off for repeating a thread. Hunting all over mumsnet for a misplaced TV thread isn't a good use of time.
I thought it was a comedy, but in the slightly uncomfortable Abigail's Party vein rather than Only Fools and Horses.

BackforGood · 03/01/2014 00:09

Oddly enough, I don't make a note of which bit of MN every thread I read has been started in. They just come up on 'Active Convos'. Not sure why it would be good use of my time to search for it, rather than OPs, but putting 'Two Doors Down' into the search box just brought it up without too much effort as it happens. Not sure why you've got the hump over this ?

JollySantersSelectionBox · 03/01/2014 00:16

Hi Back thanks for linking my thread, I've just seen this one.

I've complained to the BBC about it, it made me feel very uncomfortable. If the roles had been reversed and a man had pulled the underwear off a woman and attempted drunken sex whilst she was unconscious I think there would have been far more outcry.

I don't see how it's funny just because it's a woman doing it to a man who can't hold his alcohol while his 8 month pregnant wife is trying to break the bathroom door down.

That's not comedy.

And if you want equal treatment in the world then male sexual assault shouldn't be a joke either.

Grizzlygrowler · 03/01/2014 00:36

I watched this tonight on catch up as the adverts looked funny, I assumed comedy and me and dh settled down to watch it.

Did not expect to feel so uncomfortable with what was essentially an attempted rape scene where the initial conclusion was that the victim and pregs wife should leave. I didn't find the programme that funny in the first place and that was just the nail in the coffin. It was everything about the scene that was offensive. I too will be making a complaint.

BackforGood · 03/01/2014 00:53

I've just made a complaint to the BBC - I've never done it before, but felt very uncomfortable with this programme.

JollySantersSelectionBox · 03/01/2014 01:15

I hope you spelt it correctly Back! Wink

Thanks for the link BackforGood. (I didn't feel told off btw!) Good on people for complaining.

Just had a reply from my complaint :

Thank you for contacting us regarding ‘Two Doors Down’, broadcast on 31 December 2013.

We understand you were unhappy with the content of this programme as you felt it was inappropriate and offensive.

Your concerns were raised with the production team, who have responded as follows:

“We note you were offended by a sequence in ‘Two Doors Down’. It was not our intention to cause offence or upset, but we would contend it was an adult comedy drama which was shown after the watershed.

The show featured behaviour that was exaggerated for comedic effect which we hoped was also close enough to real life to strike a dramatic chord with viewers. From the father at pains to show he understands his gay son by uttering insensitive cliché after cliché about “gay life”, to the man eager to tell misogynistic jokes as soon as the women leave the room. The film shows us snapshots of the older adults, emboldened by drink, not quite getting how to behave. The character of Caroline in particular behaves increasingly appallingly throughout the film, at one point making a pointed remark about another woman's inability to conceive. It is clear that she is not a sympathetic character.

The scene in the bathroom makes it clear that Caroline only sits on top of the man’s kilt - she may pull his underpants down but she doesn’t pull his kilt up. Her behaviour is shown as pathetic, demeaning and absurd – to our mind, de-glamourising unwanted sexual contact.”

In the meantime, we’d like to assure you that we’ve also registered your concerns on our audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback that's made available to many BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, the ‘Two Doors Down’ team and other senior managers.

The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming and content.

Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.

Kind Regards
