What on earth is this 'Yonderland' thing? And is it suitable for my 5yo dd?

So, me and dd were sat on the sofa this evening and i was doing my usual annoying channel-surfing, because i refuse to watch Nick Jr at that time of day.

And i stopped on a programme showing some cute furry things with high-pitched voices. It was Yonderland - and i found it hilarious, even though i only caught the last 5 minutes. Grin

DD was also loving it and laughing her head off. Although i do think a vast majority of the jokes was lost on her. She just liked looking at the cute and strange creatures, and the humming frog being sucked up by an elephant-monster at the end.

i assume because of what time it's on, it's not wrong to allow a 5yo to watch it? But i was a bit Hmm at one of the jokes. The little furry things were commenting on how brilliant the woman character was and then said about her, "I would." "Yeah, i would too."

So that's got me thinking perhaps i shouldn't let dd watch it.

Can any Yonderland fans give their opinions? And perhaps explain what it's actually about? I gathered from my 5 minutes of watching it today it's a bout a woman who finds another world in her cupboard.

Its not a childrens programme, though theres nothing overt to object to.

Debbie has a portal in the larder to another world where she is the chosen one and has to battle evil. Well, evil who has trouble with the builders. Piss funny if your mind works like the writers

We love it. We watch as a family. My Dcs are 9 and 6. However, I often let my Dcs watch things that others may find unsuitable. For instance, we love Star Trek.

Yonderland is written by and involves the Horrible Histories team. It's very Monty Phythonesque. It's about a sahm who has a portal to another world in her pantry. It's funny. Bits are more 'adult' but in a way that will go way over your dc's head. There's no swearing or violence. There's a dark lord whose a baddie but only in a cartoon way.

Is say she could watch it. A lot of of she won't get, but it shouldn't disturb her. I mean what 5 yr old would understand what "I so would!" means?

Thanks, both of you. Sounds like a great show, and i love Horrible Histories.

Okay, think tomorrow we'll settle down and watch a full ep after our tea and see how she is with it.

Thanks again.

DD is nearly 6 and watches it every day. She finds it hilarious, I like it too. Its hard to explain what a minefield is and talcing someone's downstairs but generally its fine. Its on at 6.30 on a Sunday so can't be that bad.

Its first showing of the week is 6:30 on a Sunday. Dd (6) loves it. As you say some of the jokes go over their head so its good family viewing as everyone can enjoy it at their level.

As someone who grew up watching Monty Python it is probably a bit naughty for family viewing but certainly milder. I don't think it is aimed at the under 7s though , they wouldn't recognise the actors from HH which is what has given it the school aged audience(and their mums!) and it isn't usually that twee.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 03/12/2013 08:29

It's being pitched as family teatime viewing and our 8 and 5 yos watch it. There are a couple of slightly adult jokes each week but they seem to go over their heads.

There's also a little nudity if that is an issue (although only from the back).
