Is Sky Movies worth the extra money or not?

At the moment it's £8/month for 6 months. We have the entertainment package which I've been happy with and think seems to be worth it. Dd is a movie fan so she's been nagging me to get it.

The films are all pretty crap IMO.

It's not worth it beyond any special introductory / xmas deals they might do. It is really repetitive and you still have to pay additional to watch the big blockbusters. We ditched Sky movies and got LoveFilm instead which if you have a decent broadband speed is good. Tonnes of decent box sets on there too.

We are just on a months free trial of Netflix, thereafter it's £6 per month. It's got tonnes of films and box sets. I'm impressed so far - and you can link to phone, laptop etc.

Ok, thanks for replies. If it's repetitive then it may be a waste of time I guess. So the box office ones are pay to view extra?

Yes. I think SkyMovies is generally poor value for money. The additional cost of the subscription above the regular 'entertainment' packages is disproportionate. There a lot of old films there now, and 'B movies', and a lot of the most recent stuff is only on Box Office which is normally £3.50 per film. Also you can't subscribe to Movies for a while and record loads of films, thinking you can watch them back later after you have unsubscribed. They become encrypted and unwatchable.

Have a look on the menu and see what you think. Mind you, £8 a month is a better price than usual, maybe you could try it out for 6 months. But be very careful that be signing up you are not tied in for a 12 month period, which is what often happens. I would ask them about that.

Nefflix is great, and has some original content now, but be aware that a lot of the films/TV on there are not the latest stuff. Still, for £5.99 a month, you can't really complain.

I think it is, yes. It's the price of one cinema ticket a month and there's always something to watch. Friday night is movie night in this house during winter months and we all settle down and watch the new sky film.

I often watch films that I wouldn't watch with ds and Dh, usually rom coms and ds will watch a kids film. Plus there's the xmas channel!!

Davros · 28/11/2013 23:31

I think it's worth it. I hate downloading for a start and you can watch the "free" films (not the Box Office ones obviously) any time on catch up

jojane · 28/11/2013 23:42

The Xmas channel is free as is film 4

PaperPomPom · 29/11/2013 10:32

I don't think it is. When we moved we downgraded and haven't really missed it, or the sports channels (DSS and DH might disagree!). I suppose for us we decided we would rather spend the extra on something else (and I get heavily subsidised cinema tickets so that doesn't make a difference).

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/11/2013 11:08

Tbh prob not as films are repeated all week but I still pay for it lol

willowash · 30/11/2013 13:42

We have virgin and i just use now tv and lovefilm, paying for them both is still cheaper for us than adding sky movies to our virgin package. Seems to be a few more movies on nowtv too

Crutchlow35 · 30/11/2013 18:46

No, not worth it. We have just upgraded to unlimited broadband so once christmas is out of the way, movies are coming off and we are rejoining netflix.
