Anybody else going to watch? Jonathan Rhys Meyers is pretty good and will hopefully erase the 'what sweet music theyyy maaaiike' version of Dracula (even I like Gary Oldman).

Meh I'm a bit disappointed with it to be honest. Really hoping it will get better otherwise I'm not going to bother. And yes what is the deal with his bright watery eyes particularly the left one and those harsh eyebrows!?!

guineapiglet · 05/11/2013 09:17

Hi. We all watched this last night...have always liked JRM but he clearly is a mixed up soul...i would have preferred a rework of the proper Stoker version as the story is so brilliant.

Confession: I adore the 1992 Coppola version of Dracula, it isa wonderful film. Gary Oldman hams and camps it upand was a brilliant choice It is full of colour and confusion. But it is amazingly tender in places esp the part with the wolf..and when Oldman plays the young Count.
And i guess essentially it is a love story. Heres hoping this new version gets this!!

Guinea there are elements of the Coppola version that I adore, but I feel collectively it didn't completely work IFYKWIM. The cinematography, locations and costumes were spot on. I think there was some miscasting of characters. I would love to see a version faithful to the book, that isn't camp.

Yes, I watched it again with my daughter over the weekend. The real miscasting was Keanu Reeves, who is so wooden it hurts ( maybe that was the point!) and Winona Ryder wasn't great either - I loved the Tom Waits character, and adored Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins - I felt it was very passionate in places and incredibly atmospheric, you are right about the settings and sense of 'place' but it did lose the plot a bit especially towards the end. It could certainly have been improved, but after 20 years I reckon it still holds up, and it got past a very judgey teenager who liked it better than the Twilight stuffShock!!!!

LittleAbruzzenBear · 06/11/2013 14:34

YY definitely Winona and Keanu!

I wasn't impressed either, and he really isn't great at accents. Might try another episode to see if it improves but not hopeful

susiedaisy · 08/11/2013 16:28

Mmmm still not gripped. It's like a period drama. Dracula's character seems almost superfluous at the moment!

LittleAbruzzenBear · 12/11/2013 17:40

It is a bit Downton with Dracula, but I like a bit of nonsense sometimes!

Watched the first one last night and we actually really liked it - it's very steampunk, and it's closer in spirit to Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series than to anything Bram Stoker did. I wonder whether that is intentional?

I don't really rate JRM as an actor and I think he's overdoing it a bit, but many of the other characters have potential - I particularly like the way they've done Renfield, as well as the implied unhappy alliance between Dracula and Van Helsing.

The first episode was very scene setting and I don't tend to judge a series until about episode 6, but it's got potential.

That stunning girl from Merlin is always typecast as bad girls these days!

OP posts:
pointyfangs · 13/11/2013 14:06

True, but bad girls get the best costumes in these shows. Grin

LittleAbruzzenBear · 13/11/2013 20:05

They certainly do pointy!

Have you read the Anno Dracula series, OP? I really think the makers of this series must have done.

They are well worth a read. I just love the idea of a corrupt Victorian industry cabal trying to take over the world with petroleum and its attendant technology and I have to admit I like the concept of Dracula as a flawed heroic character than an out and out villain - as long as they don't get mawkish about it all. DH and I enjoy watching Arrow precisely because the main character is so flawed.

susiedaisy · 17/11/2013 22:55

I've given up Hmm. Was really hoping to love it but I'm just bored and confused!

ThreeBeeOneGee · 07/12/2013 12:11

It's not high art, but I'm enjoying it. I think it's going to be my new guilty pleasure now that Waterloo Road has finished.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 29/12/2013 19:20

I wasnt sure to start with but watched most of the series in one day...now waiting for part 2 to start as its really grown on me.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 03/01/2014 21:42

It doesn't seem to have been on for a couple of weeks. Is it coming back?

BlueSkySunnyDay · 04/01/2014 13:41

I think it's due back on 9 th January - I am a bit lost without this AND Sleepy Hollow

I don't quite get why they called it Dracula though I do think that was a bit lazy.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 04/01/2014 13:42

Thanks, will look out for it then.

Elfhame · 09/01/2014 16:18

It's on again tonight
