Watching it at 9, t'was fascinating.

Moxiegirl · 30/09/2013 22:40

Very interesting, I didn't realise that the Victorian times were so liberal mental health wise! Can't wait for the next one.

SoleSource · 30/09/2013 22:43

Bethlam was horrific wrt.condotions.

Someone posted on FB the other day ~ Why do we still experiment on animals when there are pedophiles in.orison.

I watched some of it.

It is scary how very dangerous some (most?) inmates are. Hats off to those who work with them.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 30/09/2013 22:48

Solesource Because paedophiles are typically white males and genetic testing needs to be across a more diverse spread. Also, most marketing companies would struggle with 'Trust this perfume, tested on your local paedophile' I am very anti animal testing though.

They do seem to be have been more advanced than I thought they were. Bethlam looked bloody horrific though.

SoleSource · 30/09/2013 23:04

Thank you Princess.thpught it was a stupid post on FB.

The sirens are tested at 10am each Monday and before siren each patient is locked up and there is a head count. If the siren goes off at another tome..someone has escaped.

I live in Crowthorne (where Broadmoor is) and have never been worried about having these 'neighbours' but watching last night did make me realise just how horrifically dangerous some of them are!! All the Crowthorne schools have Broadmoor escape procedures and the siren test every Monday is just part of Crowthorne life. I even spent 2 years working at the primary school which was built in 1863 just down the road to school the children of the workers of Broadmoor. What the documentary hasn't touched upon yet is that they are now in the process of rebuilding Broadmoor as the original Victorian building is no longer seen as fit for purpose. There is already massive disruption in the local area with new roads being built etc for vehicle access to the new site. The original Broadmoor building is being turned into a hotel! But, anyway the point of mentioning that is to say that whilst I always feel totally safe that no-one will escape from there and come knocking on my door, it occurs to me that over the next couple of years with all this redevelopment of the site and also the eventual transfer of the 'patients' to the new building there might be scope for a few security issues!! Shock

SoleSource · 01/10/2013 12:06

A hotel,

I read last night online about the new building and thought exactly the same wrt security issies transferring patients...I bet they're plotting between themselves. I wonder if the patients mix socially

Thanks, caught up now. Interesting programme, but did anyone else get irritated by the constant discordant background music?

SoleSource · 02/10/2013 22:31

Yes, I did!

Part 2 has just started.

Fairylea · 07/10/2013 21:11

I visited broadmoor as part of my psychology studies. Such an amazing, yet chilling place. I was amazed by how tight the security was, it seemed like we went through about a thousand doors just to get in.

Kahlua4me · 07/10/2013 21:19

I have lived near Broadmoor all my life and there have only been a few escapes. Was very annoying when we were kids as we were not allowed out to play and it took ages to get anywhere. Now I have dc I can fully understand it and why my DM slept with a hammer under her pillow!

I have several friends working in mental health and forensics is a hard slog. When I worked as a RMN none of the patients ever plotted together to escape, maybe too wrapped up in their own illness.
