Or am I just an old gimmer with a period drama fetish Wink

This is where it has all gone wrong for us, MadBus.

BTW a slight plot hole. When Edith got off the train, she handed her suitcase thingy to the train guard. Wondering why and what he was supposed to do with it.

MadBusLady · 23/09/2013 09:59

I thought so too jane.

I still don't care nearly as much about the Alfred/Jimmy/Ivy/Daisy set as I did about William v Thomas and Anna/Mr Bates, and that makes me sad. Or even Gwen and she was only in series 1. This lot all seem a bit dappy.

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2013 09:59

He was a porter. You used to have people at railway stations who would load your stuff into a trolley and wheel it out to your waiting chauffeur.

Well you did if your dad was an earl.

SorrelForbes · 23/09/2013 10:04

Did anyone hear Thomas say something like "she's not quite Sir Garnett"? I've never, ever heard that expression on TV before but have read it some old children's books.

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/09/2013 10:05

Did Thomas not have a prosthetic hand in Series2 after shooting himself to get out of the war?Confused

MadBusLady · 23/09/2013 10:07

Maybe we missed the dramatic plot twist where it grew back.

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2013 10:08

He was wearing a glove splint thing

TSSDNCOP · 23/09/2013 10:09

The flaw in your reasonable logic Georgina is that you have reckoned without the power DA has to bend the laws if time and space. WW 2 will happen by the end of the series. Don't forget WW1 was completely over in Ep 1 do series 2.

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2013 10:09

You didn't dream it janes. But Julian fellowes appears to have forgotten.

BeCool · 23/09/2013 10:48

I live in London and Londoner's tend to say they are going "Up To .... " whichever direction they are travelling in. I find it quite annoying being well acquainted with all points on the compass and aware of whether something is above or below me geographically Grin

Most people here also get confused when you say "head north" or whatever.

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2013 10:50

I've just read ALL of this thread (i deserve a medal Grin ) it's great to be back discussing and dissing DA!!

I missed the bit where was the proof that the nanny was being cruel to babysyb? Also where were the nursery maids who would have far more evidence if that was the case??

BoffinMum · 23/09/2013 10:50

Moln, that's about my budget. Grin
Maybe I should post something in MN in the job section. GrinGrin
Will it be OK to ask them to iron my pants?
What if a man applies? Will I have to let him iron my pants?

BoffinMum · 23/09/2013 10:52

Ppeatfruit, she tried to arrange for Baby Sybil to only have bread and butter for tea, and not have an egg like her cousin, so tried not to feed her to the same standard. And she tried to stop people talking to her. But I admit the signs were subtle.

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2013 10:53

Boffin You also need a cold attic with no hot water to put her in for the 5 hours that she's not scrubbing your floors.

squoosh · 23/09/2013 10:56

She called Baby Sibby a 'horrible crossbreed' and told her not to speak to Baby George.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 23/09/2013 11:04

That's true ppeat - only one nanny for two young children seems odd in such a well staffed house ? Surely there'd be at least one nursery maid ?
Then she wouldn't be so likely to leave them un-attended ?

I enjoyed it - settling down to watch on a Sunday evening is the best part - I watched on +1 at 10 after the DC were in bed (they're teenagers)

Liked the mean nanny story but thought Mary though interesting was slightly wooden at times ... especially "And you think I should choose life ?" to the Countess. Well, yes, isn't that kind of obvious ? Couldn't she say something more interesting? I blame the script writers there as much as the actress. Countess was awesome as ever.
Final scene better with Mary coming down to join the dinner with the tenant farmers, and taking an interest in affairs of the house again.

Look forward to my Sunday evenings at Downton through the autumn!

MadBusLady · 23/09/2013 11:09

I still don't understand why Pointless Rose was faffing about with the lady's maid advert at all. Does she just need a partner is pointless crime or does she know Edna already? And why is Cora, the experienced chatelaine of a great house whose previous maid went back years with her, prepared to take on an inexperienced girl after sitting in a tea shop with her for half an hour?

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2013 11:10

Thanks boffin and Juggling Grin I had gone out of the room to make a Brew while the effing ads were on! They're always too long when being watched and too short when not IYSWIM! That's terrible if the nanny was being racist about her, what a shit!

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2013 11:19

Madbuslady - because roses mother pinched obrien and she had an inkling of it so feels guilty and wants to help fix things.

The answer to your other question is that Cora is an idiot.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 23/09/2013 11:29

There was a nursery maid, she was pushing George's pram.

Housemum · 23/09/2013 11:50

Sigh, another way to waste time on a Sunday evening. It's not that well written, utterly predictable - but it's like a favourite pair of slippers. Not sure you'd want to be seen in public with them but can't bear to throw them away. Goodbye to several hours of my life over the next series...

Teapigging · 23/09/2013 11:52

Hang on, though, are we supposed to think that Thomas simply got the hump because Nasty Nanny tried to boss him around, and decided to make trouble for her without any idea that there were grounds for his accusations? Or are we to deduce he genuinely suspected she was neglectful?

If the latter, it seems bit mad to deduce neglect purely from Nasty Nanny saying Sybil wasn't to have an egg. She mightn't like eggs, or had a dodgy tummy or any other perfectly good reason! Does he have anything else at all to go on?

It just seems bit weird and short-circuiting in dramatic terms that a schemer tries to cause trouble for someone who in fact turns out, unbeknownst to anyone, to be guilty of precisely the thing the schemer accused her of...?

Sunnymeg · 23/09/2013 12:25

I think the only point of the "nasty Nanny" story was to get Thomas in Cora's good books. It screamed plot device to me!!
I think that Thomas and Edna are going to try and get rid of Mr and Mrs Bates. Something is going to go wrong and despite all their years of faithful service Anna and Mr Bates are going to be in trouble.

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2013 12:26

Nanny said she couldn't chat because sheet had left the children alone. That was enough for Thomas to stay stirring I think.

MadBusLady · 23/09/2013 12:30

He does just stir randomly and see what comes up. And he's a jammy bugger. I didn't think that was too contrived. He needs a new enemy though, surely he and Bates have got bored of this decade-long feud.
