Depends on the family and the child. My son co-slept with us for about the first six months - it just felt instinctively the right thing to do. At six months I began lifting him into a cot at night once asleep and at 3.5 he sleeps alone and sleeps 7-7. When my DH goes away on the odd night for work he comes in to my bed as a great treat and we both enjoy a cuddle and the "Toy Story" video before he goes to sleep. He has no problems with going back into his own bed and in his own room when Daddy is home though. I guess we are just lucky.

We have ds (6 months) in with us sometimes when he's teething badly, or very grizzly as it comforts him..
I must say I find it hard to sleep with him in with us though...
Definitly agree that it works for some more than others.
