DP and I quite fancy watching it but hope it doesn't go into too much detail.

Yes I clicked on a name and then switched it off. Very sad.

WestCountryLass · 15/05/2006 08:57

CD, I have read news stories about it but none recently and my brain has turned to mush since having the children so the name "The Smiths" does not ring any bells whatsoever. Am now confused about Edward Evans and The Smiths paranoid

WestCountryLass · 15/05/2006 09:00

CD, I also did not know that Ian Brady was dead Blush

Have I had my head in a bucket I ask?

CountessDracula · 15/05/2006 09:14

ok

The Smiths were Maureen (Myra's sister) and David Smith, David being groomed by Ian to join a sort of killing cult (so they believe) and as his initiation they got him round and killed Edward Evans in front of him. He then told the police (not in the plan)

Morrisey was growing up in the area at the time and was profoundly affected by these events, hence his band was called The Smiths....

alexsmum · 15/05/2006 09:34

that website got it wrong-brady isn't dead.

crazydazy · 15/05/2006 10:49

I didn't think he was dead either, I thought how have I missed that when I read it.

I watched it, thought it was good how they did not show detailed killings as I was wondering how the families involved would ever have given their consent for it to be aired.

I do however think it is disgusting that Ian Brady will be allowed to watch it in prison, he shouldn't be granted that privilege, lock the b*stard in his room without a TV, it's not hard. It is a bonus that the other inmates can watch it though so they can understand just what the man deserves.

themoon66 · 15/05/2006 14:03

Brady seems to have been on hunger strike for years. How come he's still alive??

niceglasses · 15/05/2006 14:19

Wasn't going to watch, then did and thought it was pretty well done. Not grisly at all. More of an insight into her than him I think - and not just lead along by him as its always portrayed.

I didn't realise her sister and David Smith got such a hard time after it all - she committed suicide didn't she? God, and they did the right thing. Guilty by association it would seem. Sad.

alexsmum · 15/05/2006 16:17

brady is still alive because he is being force fed through a tube.life imprisonment was so the best punishment for him.i know lots of people cry for the death penalty for things like this.he is desperate to die.being forced to stay alive in prison in much more of a punishment for him.and hindley too was desperate to get out.
i think he should have made to watch the programme.maybe it would remind him why he is in there-will maybe stop him whinging about his human rights.

crazydazy · 15/05/2006 16:48

Got his just "desserts" you could say.

Felt so so sorry for Maureen and David Smith at the end, she couldnt cope with it and then to die so young-34 of a brain tumor.

I live near to Saddleworth moors where all this took place and its so eerie up there, anyone who travels or uses this road will know what i mean its so desolate.

Am i right in thinking that Hindley showed remorse in the end?

i seem to remember her being let out for day trips was this right?

crazydazy · 16/05/2006 14:11

Not too sure if she showed remorse, thought she seemed very calculating and also Brady said in recent interviews that she was like a chameleon and would change to suite whomever she was trying to impress, I sort of agreed with that towards the end.

Yes the Moors are eerie, we travel over them from Yorkshire if going to Blackpool, Manchester Airport etc and even if the day is bright and sunny there always seems to be a horrible dullness about the place.......was always scared of breaking down around there when I used to drive home from Manchester when I worked there.

alexsmum · 16/05/2006 21:48

the moors up there are seriously spooky.whether i would think that if i didn't know the history i don't know, but they are very oppressive.
i don't think hindley ever felt remorse.she might have professed it but i don't think she felt it.
there was an article about her a while ago in the observer(?) and the guy said he had been visiting her for a long time and he had to stop because he could feel himself getting sucked in by her.She was very manipulative.one day he was asking her about her role and she said something along the lines of ' they shouldn't have been out on their own', and this freaked him out.after all these years she could still find justification for what she did.

JoolsToo · 16/05/2006 22:26

brilliantly acted, very powerful stuff, I cried.
