Nothing like the books which are really good. Jimmy Perez should be dark and Mediterranean-looking,and he does not have a female sidekick and a teenage (step)daughter.They are trying to make it into a Scottish Wallander and it hasn't worked.

I like Dougie Henshall - he was great in South Riding I thought - and haven't read the books yet so had no preconceptions about his appearance etc.

I wanted to really like it - and it was okayish I thought, but nothing to set the heather on fire

Out of all the dramas which graced our screens last week ( Lightfields/May Day and Broadchurch) it was the one we all enjoyed the most really - it was a bit more Scandi drama than the others - I thought it was very atmospheric and absolutely loved the scenery and the settlements and the amazing seas around the islands, I just wish someone could come up with a crime drama WITHOUT a murder if that makes sense, I fear we are getting immune to all these horrors, whereas I could get absorbed in something like a mild conspiracy, blackmail, etc etc, - will watch again tonight, and tape Broadchurch in the hope that gets better as well. :)

Steven Robertson, who plays Sandy (and Mr Rook in Being Human), is from Shetland so his accent was right but yes, some of the others waxed and wained (I'm from Orkney so can spot a Shetland accent a mile off). I did have a giggle at the washing flapping like crazy on the washing line and the joke about the man wearing goretex, and I liked that the local touches like the Shetland Boat and archaeology storylines. It looked gorgeous (I never thought January in the northern islands could look so good) but the storyline was a bit standard issue Sunday night drama.

I suspected as much, louisiana although DH was a bit baffled with the array of Scottish accents all the cast seemed to have!

Will be tuning in tonight again, quite enjoyed the drama. Agree with another poster though, it is slightly slow paced. Still, I want to know what happens in the end!

Both the actor that played Sandy and the actress that played Mimie are Shetlanders. Sandy's accent was a very tempered Shetland accent, not broad and he was obviously speaking the script rather than speaking 'properly' Shetland.

There are a lot of weegies in Shetland. But maybe not quite THAT high a percentage!

But it was good fun spotting 'ex's' in the crowd scenes. Two ex-school mates, an ex-colleague, my ex-hairdresser, an ex-neighbour...

The actress playing Mima-think she was in Local Hero-haven't checked yet.

And Mima's son was in Monarch of the Glen.

There's another thread about this which is so ott snobby about "needing subtitles" over the fact it dared to have Scots accents in a Scots drama. Like we haven't had to deal with Eastenders and all the English regional accents all these years? Hmmn. They should've set it in Aberdeen and had the whole thing in Doric - ha! That would have had them going.

Anyway I quite liked it , quite liked Mayday too though and am waiting to have all Broadchurch episodes before watching. Perfect fodder for the evening I'd have thought. Shetland looked beautiful!

Yes, overall, it was a brilliant two parter. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, so that's a bonus!

I personally didn't need subtitles as I'm Scottish, but was wondering how the rest of the UK felt about watching this drama as it's fairly broad the language.

I didn't like it but anyone needing subtitles shouldn't be allowed out to the shops on their own. Honestly, how ridiculous!

I was fine understanding the accents, and I'm one of those that had to have the subtitles on for the first couple of episodes of The Wire until my ears had tuned in. I thought they all had lovely clear speaking voices, it was just a pity that the plot was a bit dull and plodding.

There was another thread somewhere on MN about this, I know it got off to a slow start but I liked it. Sounds as if not having read the books beforehand was an advantage since people seem disappointed by plot twists and the choice of actor to play the lead. (If Jimmy's ancestor came onshore from the Armada that was centuries' ago, why would he necessarily be dark and Spanish looking?).

Anyway! hope they make some more, made a lovely change to see that part of the world, live in Scotland so didn't find the accents a problem, (thank goodness no broad Aberdonian accents I'd have used subtitles).

Hi - we all watched it and thought it was really atmospheric, and like others on here, are quite tempted to book a visit, even though we are literally at the other end of the British Isles - it all looked rugged, peaceful and remote, and really beautiful. The story was watchable, loved the community they lived in for its closeness and sense of identity,, certainly better drama than others on recently - we have all got used to NCIS and CSI, so it is good to watch things at a slower, more human pace, lets hope it has given the Tourist Board there a boost!

Im totally obsessed with Shetland and LOVE the books. But sadly I didnt enjoy the drama at all. The scenery was good, but otherwise it was slow, unengaging and barely resembled the book at all.
