The riot police were taking Jesus to P Pilate which I thought was in keeping with the modern take on it all

lucy5 · 15/04/2006 20:55

I thought it was quite interesting that jesus was dressed in Guantanamo [sp] bay uniform when bagged!

Keith Allen was brilliant

Gingerbear · 15/04/2006 21:03

Why was theat woman singing Robbie Williams' Angels though? and other songs interspersing the story?

Gingerbear · 15/04/2006 21:04

'that' woman

lucy5 · 15/04/2006 21:06

To give it a modern slant. All the songs were from Manchester bands, although Robbie technically isn't.

No, no, I could understand the characters singing, but the black woman on stage - didn't get that bit.

gothicmama · 15/04/2006 21:25

she was Mary

Gingerbear · 15/04/2006 21:49

ah, Blush thanks, I didn't see it all the way through.

I thought it was really good in parts, not in others - some of the songs were so powerful (Love Will Tear us Apart, but also Sit Down - always struck me as being as a very spiritual song anyway) but MPeople was really inappropriate - whether you believe Jesus to be the son of God or not he'd have known that his ministry would almost certainly have led to his death right from the start - he was upsetting too many powerful people - he didn't need to search for his inner hero! It's the best piece of religious broadcasting the BBC have done for years, and I hope it's opened a few peoples' eyes to what Jesus is really about, rather than what the churches make him out to be.

Personally I thought missing out Mary Magdalene and the other women followers was a big mistake and a massive omission. Even though the Bible contradicts itself it's apparent that it was the women that witnessed the Crucifixion rather than the men.

I thought it was almost brilliant. Some of the songs just didn't work for me - Wonderwall being one.

Felt quite proud to be a Mancunian though Grin

One thing....how did Angels get in there? Robbie's from Stoke on Trent isn't he?

threelittlebabies · 15/04/2006 23:08

I quite enjoyed it, though some of the singing was a bit dodgy IMO, but have been singing them all to myself today. DH however HATED it, thought it was utter rubbish (his words).I think it's more my scene and type of music than his (scouser! Wink) Thought the guy from James didn't look well though.

Marthamoo- didn't realise you were from Manchester, do you still live here? Smile

marthamoo · 15/04/2006 23:17

No - but not far away, I'm in Cheshire now.

threelittlebabies · 15/04/2006 23:29

Don't want to hijack, could you perhaps email me at stacey 4 mike at aol dot com (ignoring the cheesey email address if poss Blush)as wanted to ask you something. TIA

marthamoo · 15/04/2006 23:32

Done that.

unicorn · 16/04/2006 00:06

Thought it was great, an amazing feat- great direction acting and Keith Allen was brilliant.

wessexgirl · 16/04/2006 14:47

Really enjoyed this, except the corny-as-hell "Search for the hero" one of my least faves of all time. She was a good singer though.

wessexgirl · 16/04/2006 14:48

"Angels" confused me as well, not the Stoke Passion was it?

ProfYaffle · 16/04/2006 15:29

DH and I were there in Albert Square! We went because of the music and the guy from James being in it. I'm not remotely religious but found it surprisingly moving, especially when the big cross arrived and then when Jesus appeared at the top of the clock tower, that was breathtaking.

One chap in the crowd behind us made me giggle though, in grumpy tones he muttered 'too religious for me, I just want to hear Manchester music'

jamese · 17/04/2006 09:19

I thought it was the best TV on over easter period. I am a church goer but still finding my feet so intested in all aspects at the moment. I really surprised me how well it was done. Often modern takes on the story are just pure arty farty dribble but this was very well done for all to understand.

Tried to watch Jesus Christ Superstar but only lastest about 10 mins, couldn't get into the 70's feel at all.

Maybe if we see the Manc passion in 30 years time we will cringe also.

Blu · 17/04/2006 09:36

I'm really sorry I missed this. Not sure why people didn't watch it due to athieism - it was art as well as based on religious text and events- I'm sure the thousands who saw the Ramayana at the national thetare weren't all Hindu.....

mum2sam · 17/04/2006 10:24

I also watched spring harvest at minemind on songs of praise yesterday. I thought that was very good with very modern uplifting music. If I could find a church that plays that sort of uplifting music with a band instead of boring hyms id prob go alot more.
