I will be here.

OP posts:
ILoveOnionRings · 25/10/2012 22:01

Sorry in advance if I missed the explanation but why was it only girls that were affected?

bodiddly · 25/10/2012 22:01

Yeah, I find Lori's case the saddest as well. She is obviously an intelligent girl and is suffering with pain as well as the tics etc

CuriosityColaKilledTheCat · 25/10/2012 22:02

Hopefully the wider publicity will gain the families the interest that they are looking for e.g. Wider medical help and interest.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/10/2012 22:03

I can't understand why they didn't call House in. He'd have worked it out.

CuriosityColaKilledTheCat · 25/10/2012 22:03

bodiddly I thought that as well.

It was weird that the medical explanation was actually quite vague. Unless the programme had been cut that way?

Jellykat · 25/10/2012 22:05

Did you see at the end - 2 new cases September 2012.. Sad

Lori's case could well be Lymes, i have a 22 yr old friend with Lymes, its horrendous if allowed to develop in the body and not caught fast.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/10/2012 22:07

The article seems even scarier

glamourousgranny42 · 25/10/2012 22:08

The fact that it is only girls suggests it is not an environmental cause. Lori who still had tics while sedated doesn't attend the Leroy school. I suspect mass psych problem in the girls from Leroy. I have heard the PANDAS theory applied to OCd as well but only in america. Self fulfilling prophecy? They love their labels!

bodiddly · 25/10/2012 22:08

They seemed to gloss over the fact it still happened when sedated or asleep. You have no control over your body when asleep so I don't know how you can explain it away.

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 25/10/2012 22:09

I watched bits. Lori's case seemed to me like it might be different from the rest- maybe it is Lyme's. An unfortunate coincidence she was in the same area as whatever the other was.

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 25/10/2012 22:10

Sorry, as I said missed bits. Wasn't it only Lori who showed symptoms when sedated?

pommedechocolat · 25/10/2012 22:12

I didn't understand why lori and her family wouldn't even try the conversion therapy when it had worked for the other girls?! Surely anything worth a shot?

sausagesandwich34 · 25/10/2012 22:33

I'm just watching this on +1

is it just my imagination or do the bruises on that girl's face look like they will wash off?

just a thought....

Lori looks genuine, the others I'm leaning towards mass hysteria even though that term is outdated and they don't use it anymore

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 25/10/2012 23:48

I recorded it and watching it now.

Gunznroses · 26/10/2012 19:00

Unfortunately missed this, but i have a question about Tourettes, the medics all seem to say its an "inherited condition", do any of you have Tourettes and do your parents or grandparents have it ?

gobbymare · 26/10/2012 19:15

Hiya Gunzroses, my son has tourettes but no-one else in our family has, my sons tourettes was brought on by medication (ritalin & concherta) which was used to control his ADHD, altho the specialist says that it wasn`t the actual medication that made him have tourettes but tourettes comes hand in hand with ADHD, or so i am told & that ADHD suffers already have it but the medication "brings them out".
I watched this program and thanked my lucky stars that my sons tourettes is not half as bad as these poor ladies.

Gunznroses · 26/10/2012 19:21

Thanks gobby. I had heard of the link between adhd meds and tics. Based on this recent program im just wondering what type of environmental inluences might bring on this condition. Both ds have tourettes but no one in family has it, its very strange when they keep saying its hereditary.

gobbymare · 26/10/2012 19:33

I have done some research into the ADHD and they say that the ADHD is hereditary, also that it is more common in boys than girls and that it comes from the father, I am not so sure about the tourettes being hereditary because as i have learnt it is a brain defect and is within the same part of the brain as dyslexia which if i remember is in the front lobes of the brain.
His dad has dyslexia but as ADHD i dont know because its different once they are adults.

Gunznroses · 26/10/2012 19:42

I do wish there was more awareness about it, when the tics first started i was discussing with a friend who just burst out laughing and said "you're bonkers!" Sad

gobbymare · 26/10/2012 20:05

I find the tics more upsetting than his ADHD at times, because it makes him stand out where as his ADHD just makes him out to be loud and hyper.
My son isnt a verbal "ticker" (altho he had a cough tic for a while which i didnt know about., just thought he was poorly")
My son used to lift is arm out forwards and squint and put up his hand and wink at the same time its hard not to notice that in class.
But thankfully since a change again in his medication (streara) his tics have reduced loads.
Does your child have ADHD Gunz ?

Gunznroses · 26/10/2012 20:09

One of them is boderline adhd. Does your dc with tourettes nod his head at all ?

Gunznroses · 26/10/2012 20:11

How did you decide on which med to go fir seeing as he has both adahd and tics ? That really worried me, in the end we didnt/havent used any medication.

gobbymare · 26/10/2012 20:24

No nodding of the head as yet but they change all the time, at the moment it is clenching his muscles under his chin/throat , which no one really sees so thats a bonus. He didnt have any tics or tourettes when he was diagnosed with ADHD, it was the meds that "brought them out".
He started with ritalin, which most tend to start with but it is a class A drug (Amphetamine) which i didnt know when i first agreed to start on this medication. We started on 10mg of this but it wasnt working much "according to the school" so we upped it to 20mg this worked well but then i noticed the tics and the spcialist explained that its a "side effect" so i asked for a change. So we tried concherta and again started low with not much effect upped it again and still not much change, so she suggested going bk to ritalin, the tics came thick and fast with verbal tics this time "clearing the throat every 2 seconds and the cough" so again i asked for a change so she suggested stratera, which isnt a class A like the other 2 and so far for 6 months we have had good results and he is on 40mg, no side effects as yet but have to keep an eye on the liver, other than that we are i feel so far getting there.
I was very much against medication because i felt like i was under pressure from the school to put him on it ,and i could handle him and didnt want to medicate my child because the school said i should, so i refused but then he was getting frustrated at not being able to do the things at school the other kids did like sit still and read a book etc, so decided to give it a try with the lowest doseage i could.

Gunznroses · 26/10/2012 20:31

Yes pressure was mainly from school to get him on meds! Although i have no problems with him at home, but luckliy Camhs disagreed that he needed meds, started with new teacher now and miraculousy he has settled down, not perfect, but engaging, being attentive etc.

I hope your ds continues to improve/ remain stable, can i ask how old is he ? They say it all peaks at about 10ish years of age so after that you would have seen your worst, but dont quote me im no medic!

gobbymare · 26/10/2012 20:42

He is 11 now 12 in may and i have to say the teachers make all the difference in terms of how they manage at school, im glad you son has a teacher who has the patience as i had to move schools for my son to find that as his other school didnt "believe" in ADHD grrr, and that was the headmaster !! grrr again!!.

Thankyou i hope he does too altho we are now as secondary school and have had a few hiccups but it wasn`t as bad as i had worried it would be all through the 6 weeks holidays lol.

CAMHS for us were amazing, i don`t know where we would have been without them.

I think the school does this because they have a duty to the other children too and they hired a teaching assistant to help my son with being in a class, as he used to pull at the teachers clothing for her attention which obviously isnt acceptable.

How old are you 2 sons ?
