they're doing East Molesey. DH and I grew up a couple of miles away. In those days, East Molesey was the arse end of the universe; where the poor people lived, the roughest of the Council tenants were dumped. Dangerous and nasty.

We are greatly enjoying the fact that this particular couple may not actually be able to afford to live there, when they are clearly very well to do. In our day if you couldn't afford to live there, then you were seriously on your uppers.

The contrast between then and now is extraordinary, and making us laugh like drains.

No what they bought one over the road from the house they offered on but got rejected. Was a doer upper - just what they wanted.

I thought the other couple were awful - I got the impression she just wanted to have a house she could show off to the other mummies - not only did it have to be in 18 streets, it had to have space, big garden, and character all for about half a mil less than the going rate in those roads. Then they find a place on budget and make a ridiculously low offer. Soooooo glad the owners wouldn't budge. I wanted Kirstie to shout "Wake up you can't afford to live here"
The prices in East Molesey are mad - this is what you could get for that budget round here.

I know whare I'd rather live if I had that kind of money.

Jux · 12/10/2012 15:17

That's lovely, fussychica.

Here, you could get this - and a load of others.

That woman was absolutely awful. I wonder if she is a mumsnetter. I would say not but she needed kicking. Kirsty was very patient. The other couple seemed really nice.

whatkungfuthat · 12/10/2012 16:10

I'm glad the nice couple were sorted. The others were exactly the type of arrogant, entitled arses that give me The Rage.

AKissIsNotAContract · 12/10/2012 17:15

I don't see how anyone with a 930k budget for a house could be described as ordinary.

The man was alright, he seemed to be desperate to keep his wife happy knowing that he was punching well above his weight

diddl · 12/10/2012 17:38

"I don't see how anyone with a 930k budget for a house could be described as ordinary."

What´s money got to do with it?

They were ordinary with a big budget!

AKissIsNotAContract · 12/10/2012 17:46

diddl: you asked earlier 'what made you think the couple were well to do?'

I'd say the 930k budget made people think that. How rich do you have to be to be well to do IYO?

OhTinky · 12/10/2012 17:55

For the better part of a million British pounds I'd want to be well well away from neighbours, bigger gardens and rooms.

East Molsely looked nice but nothing special. That 18 street couple took all the fun out of a healthy budget house hunt.

whatkungfuthat · 12/10/2012 18:20

The 18 streets couple made me think that they had been looking for ages and expected P&K to pull something out of the bag for them just because its on the telly deluded feckers

whatkungfuthat · 12/10/2012 18:21

AKiss DP said exactly the same about the guy

diddl · 12/10/2012 18:50

I suppose I´ve always thought of well to do as not just money but also education, how you speak.

The husband reminded me of Harry in sex & the city.

NoWayNoHow · 12/10/2012 19:30

Well, I can tell you that her daughter is definitely at the local infant school (same school as DS) and not at a private school, but I don't actually know her so haven't got any inside gossip.

But, my guess is that they were already renting in the area - they would have to have been already there before admissions closed as I can't see how the school could have taken them only a few months before starting - it's a popular school.

Having said that, I don't understand why they limited their search so severely if the school place was already in the bag - there's plenty of places in the not-so-far-off vicinity where they could have got a LOAD more bang for their buck. Weird to be so restrictive on location...

Arithmeticulous · 12/10/2012 20:05

Some LA have a rule about moving once you have accepted a place. Perhaps the sibling rule is trumped by distance rule. Perhaps they really wanted to walk to school?

chipstick10 · 12/10/2012 20:20

Im so glad iit wasnt just me. I couldnt stand that couple who only wanted to live in one of 18 streets. They made me feel quite angry. She was a proper snob who wanted a house that looked right from the outside. i was delighted when they didnt get it. mean i know.

Way2Go · 12/10/2012 20:44

Sad. We used to live in East Molesey, I thought it was a nice place to live.

.....But then there's West Molesey. Grin

Jux · 12/10/2012 23:06

Oh waytogo, I'm so sorry Blush. When were you there - not 50 years ago, I bet.

And you're right about West Molesey....... . Grin

Jux · 12/10/2012 23:07

And, actually, after what I've said about, I ought to come out and tell everyone that my best friend lived in East Molesey.

Grin

We lived there about 20 years ago, I liked the pubs, walking along the Thames, the Royal Parks and exploring the grounds of Hampton Court in the evenings. Our house was one street away from the Grand Designs magical 18 streets.

The Post Office rearranged the postcodes when we lived there which meant our house officially moved from East Molesey to West MoleseyShock. All the neighbours went apoplectic Hmm they thought it would knock thousands off the value of their homes. Letters were being sent to MP's and they even did a petition. They were angry! We were told we were the only house to refuse to sign the petition. We figured that rather than living in the rough end of East Molesey we now lived in the posh end of West Molesey.

Way2Go · 13/10/2012 00:08

Ohh and we mustn't forget it's not East Molesey it's East Molesey Village nowadays. posher

BestIsWest · 13/10/2012 00:26

Baffles me when people have £840k to spend on a house. I would just move to Wales, buy something really nice for 200k then retire Grin. Do some voluntary work or something.

I want to see how the snob couple have done up their house. I have never come across people better able to make a place look cheap than snobs. Imagine the neighbour's in the 18 streets will be complaining about plummeting house values now.

OP posts:
MarthasHarbour · 16/10/2012 13:33

I watched it last night, i too thought the 18 streets woman was only after her trophy house to show off to all the other yummy mummies. I really liked the house they lost out on, FGS she was a cheeky cow wanting to offer almost £100k less on a house not even on the market Hmm I bet Kirstie's gophers were pissed off after having leafleted 600 odd houses!

i had the discussion with myself about how they should have moved before schools admission closes as-we are in a panic about that at the mo

I also thought he looked like Harry from SATC!

The Derbyshire couple were lovely - i wanted them to do well Smile
