What do your 6+ yos watch on TV?

Having turned off a dreadful episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, with yet another sappy American teenage girl crying over a 'broken heart', I have banned teenager TV again. So what do your children watch once they have grown out of Cbeebies? DS is 9 and DD is 6. Spongebob, Phineus and Ferb, Garfield, Scooby Doo (although the new ones are awful) are OK, DS likes Legends of Avatar and still the occasional Ben 10. But what other than cartoons? We aren't in the UK but have Sky and for older children it is 90% American, and complete rubbish full of dodgy stereotypes, especially for girls. There may be shows on that we don't know and I'd be happy to buy DVDs or download something decent.

Any suggestions??

I'm struggling with this too. DD is 6 and although she likes some of the stuff on Cbeebies still its all getting a bit babyish now. Some of the stuff on CBBC is ok, but a lot of it is too old for her but she does like Bear Behaving Badly, Ooglies, My Monsters and Arthur. Don't know if that helps!

Mine (5&8) quite like non-fiction. Science type programmes for children. Animal programmes. Blue Peter on the iplayer (VPN is your friendGrin)

There's a Just William on DVD. Then there's things like Anne of Green Gables. Cosby Show mine love!

Do you have TinyPop? It has adverts but some programmes my kids like-Madeleine, Milly Molly, little bear.

We are currently paying for kids channels as dd is inbetween cbeebies and cbbc. There are things she likes on playhouse Disney and nick Jnr

Can you get CITV and CBBC? I'm not sure which channels these are on and I don't think suitable for a 6 yr old but should be ok for a 9 yr old. It would be better watching them from the beginning.

Tracey Beaker is a bit annoying and shouty at times.
My Parents are Aliens is funny.
The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Young Dracula.

Is your DS into Doctor Who yet?

Our daughter loves horrible histories and has learned so much from it as well. She was six when she started watching it and has now just turned seven. She also likes Tracey Beaker as well but I hate it! She likes that new show that has just started called Wolf blood too.

We only have Freeview.

My favourites are The Slammer and Prank Patrol.

To answer your question, dd (almost 7) will watch anything on CBBC. She will still watch Milkshake and Cbeebies as she has a wee brother.

We are on Season 3 of Doctor Who. She also love Come Dine With Me and The Simpsons.

Thank you all! We are in NZ and have Disney Channel, Disney Jnr, Nickelodeon and Nick Jnr and a NZ channel which shows a mixture of stuff, mainly for younger children. We have had Sarah Jane Adventures which DS loved, as did I being a huge Dr Who fan. I haven't tried him with Dr Who yet. I think he might find it scary but maybe at 9 he'd be fine - I'm sure I watched it at 9 !

Some great suggestions there - will have a google and see what I can find. Horrible Histories sounds good for DS - we have a few of those books. They do watch Simpsons with DH as a weekend treat, and the real life animal shows like The Zoo (Auckland Zoo). There seems to be a huge jump from the nice shows and cartoons for preschoolers to some of the dreadful cartoons (Adventure Time anyone - WTF???) and 'sitcoms' for older kids. What happened to shows like Rentaghost and Press Gang?
