Have missed corrie lately - whats happening?

puff · 15/03/2006 22:32

Blush moondog, however I am intimately acquainted with someone who was once heavily involved in Coronation Street Grin

welshboris - I'm not sure, I know it's really affecting me though and soaps rarely move me!

I used to be hooked on Corrie (many years ago) and \link{http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv_and_radio/story/0,,1730257,00.html\this review by Nancy Banks-Smith} made me really Sad, esp the bit about Deirdre.

freshstart · 15/03/2006 22:48

I have stopped watching as my Grandma is a very severe sufferer of alzheimers. I say my Grandma, but it isnt. My Grandma went about 10 years ago but we go and visit the woman who looks a bit like her but she cant talk or feed herself :( Horrible, horrible disease. :(

Eve2005 · 15/03/2006 22:51

she lived in holland, knew her whole life she'd get it as it runs in family. grandfather hid it from us until they came on holiday which tipped her over the edge. she thought people were chasing her, trying to hurt her and i was the only one who she'd let near her (was 11 at the time). we were staying in a very posh country house and she was running around the grounds trying to escape 'them'. she snapped out of it later that day and realised what was happening. never seen a human being so scared in my life.

when my grandfather died 5 years later she didn't know who's funeral she was at, thought it was her dads and she hadn't recognised my dad in three years (only time i saw him cry in my life was when he told me she didn't know who he was)

the worst part of it all though was at my gf funeral she looked at me with that look you get when someones face is familiar, but you can't quite place them. part of her was still in there, lost.

my dad is already getting it at 50 and i almost certainly have the gene, my daughter will have to see us the same way Sad

sorry for long post, don't talk about it alot as it's too painful for my dad and my mom doesn't really understand how it feels when it's your own future your looking at.

Altzhiemers is a horrible, horrible thing. My nan had it and was living with us when I was a teenager, and I am ashamed to say I didn't handle it very well. She used to wander into my room and ask me if I was a nurse, and she would wake up screaming, and we'd rush into her room and she's be saying 'Go away, leave me alone, I am just an old lady' to imaginary people who seemed to be attacking her. It was really upsetting. Eventually, it became too much for my mum to deal with and she went to stay at a nursing home, coming home every weekend and for special occassions. One Christmas, we had spent all day with her, opening presents, eating lunch together, playing games etc., and in the car on the way back to the home she said 'It'll soon be Christmas'. Sad Now, my friends dad has got it, who I have known since childhood, and it is really sad to witness. So far, I think Corrie have handled it sympathetically.

Kelly1978 · 16/03/2006 11:01

I think he is going to die soon isn't he? I heard he has a heart attack and dies on the cobbles.

fairyjay · 16/03/2006 11:10

Having not lived or seen this dreadful illness close to, I've felt that Corrie is portraying it 'too' realistically. However, if it helps people understand more, maybe that's not a bad thing.
