They have vaguely mentionedthat they'll all save up and fin the money somehow.

I'm no sure they'll need to add any further medical conditions like the viruses you mention. They've yet to have their surrogacy medicals, and there doesn' seem to have been any discussion yet whatsoever that EDS is an autosomally dominant inherited condition, so both Katie and Izzy must have it (unless Katie's apparent parents are not her biological ones) and so will any biological child for either of predicting the type or severity of how EDS manifests itself. But a topic I would have expected them to have properly discussed, and a donor egg considered.

It just seems such a rushed storyline and the Medicaid were mentioned were mentioned a few times.

They seem to have completely forgotten that eds is hereditary. It was vaguely mentioned when Katie was pregnant.

I wondered if Katie would find she has EDS too. You have a fifty/fifty chance of passing in EDS, I take it their Mum has EDS too?

Strange storyline the surrogacy one.

I know the girl who plays Izzy has EDS herself and corrie spent time researching the syndrome.

They're not considering surrogacy in order to avoid the baby having EDS though, are they? My understanding is that Izzy doesn't feel that she could carry a child because she has the condition.

MrsJREwing · 28/08/2012 18:34

I think it is more Izzy feels her body cant carry a baby. Lots of people with EDS carry a baby ok to term, I didnt even know mc was more common in those with EDS.

GnocchiNineDoors · 28/08/2012 18:38

I don't think they are 'bothered' (for want of a better word) about the EDS. It certainly doesn't seem to put them off having a baby, and tbf, if I were a carrier, it wouldn't stop me either.

I hope it is a success, and more so, that Katie handles it well so that I don't have to look at Owen being all smug when it fails

EdithWeston · 01/09/2012 07:28

I agree the reason they are considering surrogacy at present is nothing to do with passing on EDS.

But they mentioned the need for preparatory steps such as full medicals for all participants. That one of the proposed gamete suppliers has a condition of unpredictable severity which is autosomally dominant would not go unnoticed in real life.

PuffPants · 01/09/2012 10:03

I don't get why Gary and Izzy need a baby right now. Aren't they only in their early 20s? Haven't they just recently got back together? Hasn't the poor sister only just recovered after having a baby at 16 and post-natal depression? What the heck is the rush about? Confused

Privacymaintained - classical EDS has now been approved for PGD so may be worth looking into? My DH has classical EDS.

I wish you well, PM x

I don't watch corra either but am in the process of becoming a surrogate. Interestingly a private fertility clinic I have had a couple of tests at has advised the coronation st writers. The person I spoke to told me they actually didn't want to be named/associated with it as it will probably need in tears and has been rushed through so much. Not really giving a clear picture of surrogacy.
Still it is a soap after all and it has taken us about 12 months to get to egg transfer, not the most riveting viewing watching someone have a million tests on various lady bits!
