How much do you think the average house in Albert Square costs?

Not that Im moving there. Indeed, Ive only just restarted watching EE after about 5 years. Im a Corrie girl, myslelf.

And thats the question, in Corrie they live in average terraced houses with endless secret bedrooms that probably cost about £65 grand at todays prices? Perfectly doable on the mundane jobs they all have. Dont forget they dont have travel expenses either as they all work on the doorstep.

So, down in that London...... The enders seem to have similar jobs and commuting times but, their houses are these great big Victorian jobbies. And, nicely decorated too. Realistically how much would Janines house cost in London?

Thats it, really.

£1.3 million.

That's how much houses cost according to the Daily Fail when they are inhabited by anyone claiming any kind of benefit or allowance. And you look at the photo and think, 'It's just a terraced house in London...'

I think the obvious mortage dichotomy explains the clunky plot device of having all the EastEnders renting off one another.

LineRunner · 24/08/2012 15:24

mortgage

A terraced house in the Whitechapel area, for example, in the streets around Royal London Hospital, would cost at least £575k. In a conservation square £1.5million.

Go towards Spitalfields and it is £1milliion upwards and the Isle of Dogs, where Canary Wharf is based, a house overlooking the Thames will be well in excess of £1m, inner island conservation area docker's cottage around £500k.

The only way the average East Ender would be able to afford a house on an average wage would be to inherit one or if it was some sort of part-buy scheme where only a proportion of the house is purchased. A self employed person might be able to afford one with some ducking and diving tax avoidance and mortgage form creativity.

with garage

LynetteScavo · 24/08/2012 16:09

Dot would like it.

LynetteScavo · 24/08/2012 16:12

a mere £240K

overthemill · 24/08/2012 16:19

love the pics! I always thought EE was based on Dalston? But when I bought my first house it was n Hackney near the old hospital: £38,000. Should never have sold it,would be over £400K now...

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 24/08/2012 23:38

I agree with Lynette...I was going to say around £250K

ValiantBee · 25/08/2012 04:01

It really depends on the postcode in East London. There is a big difference between places like Leyton and Walthamstow and what people think of as the true East End such as Bow and Whitechapel. E20 was, until recently, a fictional postcode. Stratford now uses it.

I think that the architecture of this one is similar and it is in Bromley-by-Bow
for £750,000. In Walthamstow, it might be £450k. Most areas have a 'village' or conservation area that will a premium will be paid for.

In reality, there would be a mix of people who had inherited property and many houses that were being rented. There would be many more Indian, African, Chinese, Portuguese and Russian residents. There would be lots of cycles chained up too! There would also be urbanites who had bought houses and gentrified the area and would be working in the West End or Canary Wharf and travelling in by tube or bike. There would probably be a few students at Queen Mary's or UEL whose parents had bought them a flat or house and would be letting out rooms to their friends. There would also be more artists and designers, as East London is full of them.

Here's listings for Albert Square E15 which come in under £400k.

There's an Albert Gardens E1, but that's closer to £750k.

I remember a similar comment being made about the apartment in Friends - no way a waitress and chef could have lived there.

Monica 'inherited' the rent-controlled apartment from the dead granny I think in some convoluted plot device.
