How interesting, this is what I'm looking to do. Let's see how it goes? I like the fact one of the ladies said 'it's the hardest thing I've done bar giving birth' argh

I had a student do mine and then the midwife checked. I had an epidural and the student could have chopped my legs off. COuldn't feel a thing so she could take her time and have a good root about Grin

hellsbells76 · 07/08/2012 22:10

yup - I did all my 'learning' VEs on women with epidurals (with consent, obvs!) They didn't let me loose on anyone who could feel what I was doing until I'd (eventually) located my first cervix Grin

em baby beside the tea trolley!?! surely that's not safe?! Confused

MrsShortfuse · 07/08/2012 22:20

I think half the midwifery and medical students practised on me. I should have sold tickets. I didn't mind at all, I felt quite pleased to be contributing to their education.

teaandthorazine · 07/08/2012 22:22

Yep, must admit I was a bit Hmm about the 1st year VEing a woman without epidural for her first try. But the whole programme brought back lots of memories of training for me, thought it was pretty good.

As for the baby beside the tea trolley, don't know where else they could've put it Grin

My mate is a midwife.
When I had my dcs 4 & 5 she was a student and she leapt at the chance to be at my home births.
She was fab.
tbh I am not very keen on student hcp being present but I don't feel that way about midwives.

Vanfurgstan · 08/08/2012 00:13

How r they gna learn if they are not allowed to practice? They are under supervision. Jess was lovely and so calm

MousyMouse · 08/08/2012 09:48

a student midwife delivered my dc2.
she was absolutely lovely, it was her first delivery. her supervisor was there all the time as well.
I really felt reassured because the supervisor explained every step to the student and she asked many intelligent questions. I found that very comforting. and she was very good at rubbing my back during contractions.

I'm really enjoying this programme.

I had students with both my births. They have to practice on somebody. DC1 was the students 13th birth and she delivered DC. DC2 was students 1st birth and i do worry that I put her off. She was so young and quiet whilst I was crying and wailing and moaning. I let her examine me. The midwife went first then the student. The student was much more gentle and I told them so too.

FrillyMilly · 12/08/2012 13:57

I agree with Mousymouse because the student is being told everything you get to know everything. Although them doing the sac and placenta check post birth was a bit much for me

stressheaderic · 13/08/2012 22:38

Aw I've just watched this episode on catch-up. What a brilliant insight.
A trainee midwife delivered my DD and she was fabulous, but she was in her final year and had racked up enough 'normal' births to not need mine.

I mentor students in my job and I acknowledge that we were all trainees once and everyone has to start somewhere, so I really didn't mind student midwives having a root about, every other bugger did.

my dc1 was delivered by a student midwife who was amazing. I couldn't have asked for a nicer person to help deliver my first baby into the world
