Anyone watching? Dr Who is actually quite good. I live near where it was filmed so I'm enjoying the location spotting too.

Just me then. It is really very very good indeed so worth catching on Iplayer.

True story too.

Loved it. BBC at it best. Just been reading about Bert on t'internet.

GaryTankCommander · 25/07/2012 22:25

I watched it... Really enjoyed it. Matt Smith is a great actor, but I can't get used to his face. I don't know what it is about it, but it just doesn't look real, does that make sense?

difficultpickle · 25/07/2012 22:42

He was the spitting image of the real Bert though wasn't he? It definitely was the BBC at its best. I'm surprised that there wasn't more of a trailer about it though. I only watched it by chance.

Loved it! Best thing I've watched for ages.

GaryTankCommander · 25/07/2012 22:51

Really you think... They had the same glasses, I'll give you that! Wink

GaryTankCommander · 25/07/2012 22:53

It was good, classic BBC! They've gone off the rails with their 'talent' shows... the voice, strictly come dancing whatever.... Bert and Dickie is the kind of thing they do best!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 25/07/2012 22:53

Very good, but I don't think the scenes at Maidenhead Rowing Club were entirely filmed at Maidenhead Rowing Club!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 25/07/2012 22:56

Was following it, quite enjoyed it.

There were tons of adverts for it!

difficultpickle · 25/07/2012 23:02

It was filmed at Upper Thames Rowing Club near Henley. On the Wiki bit about Bert there is a Pathe film which was made in 1947 at Maidenhead rowing club.

I didn't see a single advert for it.

I loved it! DH is a rowing buff and commented on their technique the whole way through though, which was more than annoying!

OlaRapaceFru · 26/07/2012 08:12

I missed the first half hour (watching the end of something else). Please would someone tell me how they got together in the first place as they seemed an unlikely pairing?

Agree with the 'BBC at its best' comments. I didn't see any trailers for it either, I only found out about it 'cos a friend mentioned it to me yesterday lunchtime.

Cakebot · 26/07/2012 17:12

Just watched this on iplayer and I thought it was lovely! Thought DS would like it, as a 11th Doctor devotee, and he did. I might have to watch it again with out 'Why is Doctor Who crying?' 'Why is Doctor Who sad?' 'Is he going to do the Olympic torch? ' etc etc etc...

Cakebot · 26/07/2012 17:13

They were put together because Dickie's double skulls partner wasn't fast enough and they had two good single skulls rowers, so told Bert it was double skulls or no place in the team. ( A bit like x Factor!)

OlaRapaceFru · 26/07/2012 17:32

Thank you, Cake. Not only was I thinking that they were unevenly matched physically, I was under the impression that there might have been a 'class' issue, which might have been alluded to in the programme?

The Leander Club was probably incredibly snobby in those days, so there may have been a 'problem' about letting a 'working class chap' join? (I don't subscribe to these views, but can see that it could have happened in those days.)

I'll definitely try to watch the first 30 minutes on iPlayer, or catch up with a repeat - I'd love to see the whole programme again anyway.

rezzle · 26/07/2012 17:38

Yes, in the first 30 minutes he went for his first training session at Leander and they wouldn't let him through the front entrance as he wasn't a member.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/07/2012 17:41

Isn't Leander still snobby.....

OlaRapaceFru · 26/07/2012 18:07

I expect it is, yes, amothersplaceisinthewrong Angry
(not with you, with the snobby attitude of the club)

rezzle · 26/07/2012 20:07

I was biting my tongue about that, amother, but I think it may well be true.

difficultpickle · 26/07/2012 20:21

There was a big class issue between them (according to my Google research Grin). The size was an issue too - Bertie was 5' 9" and Dickie was 6' 4". I doubt these days they would put two rowers together that physically were so different. What is amazing is they only had a month to train together before the Games. Incredible achievement go on and win.

Figgygal · 26/07/2012 20:23

Haven't watched it yet but I work with dickie burnells daughter and she said that her dad was portrayed much posher than reality

BringBackLONDON2012 · 26/07/2012 21:16

really figgy? I didn't think he came across as awfully posh, just rich (although he must have been pretty posh to attend Harrow in the 20s)! It's very true that they wouldn't be in a crew together nowadays - Bert would be a lightweight.

NanBullen · 26/07/2012 21:19

I loved the bit where 2 of the olympic organisers were discussing how well the selling advertising space was going and one of them said yes i think it may catch on! Ha!
