Is this useful or is it all about how young Rosina Ali looks? Botox do we think?

What a crap programme. Just a vehicle for this womans' narcissism.

Minimammoth · 23/07/2012 22:15

I was thinking that too fmback. My DH said ' a good slap or baseball bat?' Grin

I was thinking there were a lot of unnecessary shots of her walking around - clearly thinking 'chin up, swishy hair, fabulous profile'! And sorry but attractive as she undoubtedly is, she does not look 34!

Minimammoth · 23/07/2012 22:25

Yes on the skin test thing, false eyelashes carefully avoided, I said 43. Sorry luv you are just a little too pleased with yourself.

RubyFakeNails · 24/07/2012 02:19

I was totally in awe of her as was DH Envy

She seemed like bloody superwoman or something, all intelligent and being a surgeon as well as being so beautiful and swishy haired. Then doing things like snorkelling and with all her jokes.

I guess it could be irritating but I guess she's like the female of that guy who does the stars etc the on everyone supposedly fancies.

Oh and I bloody well knew she has eyelash extensions!

SoleSource · 24/07/2012 10:19

Big nose thinks far too much of herself.

noddyholder · 24/07/2012 10:20

Yes can't take to her either.

NickL · 24/07/2012 12:13

Poor dissection skills for a surgeon.

Beryllium · 24/07/2012 13:44

As a scientist (PhD chemist) working in medical research I was very interested in the programme. However, it was very disappointing on all levels. The scientific content was very thin and superficial, just like the presenter. Ali failed to impart authority, objectivity and credibility. She was more focused on herself and her looks. Her screaming when dissecting an octopus was extremely unprofessional. She is beautiful, we can all see that, but that had no place in the name of science. I guessed she was 43, my son guessed 42, so we were not far off.

shrimponastick · 24/07/2012 13:49

uw.. I recorded it to watch later. However it doesn't sound worth an hour of my time!

Minimammoth · 24/07/2012 13:49

Beryllium, like you I had hoped for new science backed info, but, sun, smoking, and diet, nothing new there. The real breakthrough could have been presented in 20 mins. Not good value for money. I think an older presenter would have worked better.

OP posts:
Stangirl · 24/07/2012 13:59

So what was the key info? Someone please spare me the bother of watching the whole thing.

Minimammoth · 24/07/2012 15:13

Sun is predominant in wrinkle formation, avoid smoking, the big interesting thing for me was how damaging sugar in the blood is, ( my husband is diabetic and although I am 7 years older than him, he is often taken as being same age or older). And then L'oreal are doing some work on using 'glucans' in skin cream, but only tested on a small sample.
Perhaps someonelse could fill the gaps. The presenter was so annoying she distracted from the science.

Just had a look at her media shot for the programme - she doesn't look under 40 at all, she has the hooded eyelids of a mid-40yo.

PostBellumBugsy · 24/07/2012 15:30

I'm really disappointed to hear this wasn't very good. I was going to watch it on iplayer. The glycan / glycobiology research sounded interesting, but if they have dummed it down to superficial, then I probably won't bother.

As a low carber, I can vouch for the difference that sugar makes. My skin is so much better when I don't eat any.

CarlaBruni · 24/07/2012 15:37

Oh, this was rubbish wasn't it? Really vacuous. The sugar thing though - I know we're all meant to avoid refined sugar but all fruit and veg (which was what was advocated as the elixir of youth) is full of sugar. Does the collagen really know the origin of your sugar intake? I'm glad Susannah and Charlie on BBC Breakfast challenged her about ageing - it's not actually an illness. Very irritating woman.

Minimammoth · 24/07/2012 15:52

Didn't see the breakfast thing, but glad they challenged. You are right it's not an illness, just built in obsalesence ( apols for spelling). No magic formula to turn back time, just common sense and avoid sun beds.

In fact I bet mumsnet terms have better anti ageing advice. Put us over to health and beauty mumsnet.

I wasn't wildly impressed by the programme, - but I put that down to the Horizon team which will have been in control and given Rozina Ali a script to read. Presumably they wanted a top plastic surgeon (which she is - one of the very best) to front the programme, and the fact that she is a beautiful glamorous woman was a big bonus.

She is very far from narcissistic - I know because I have met her, and will be gin under her very skilled knife in the future, this programme focussed on the cosmetic aspect, but actually Miss Ali works wonders for women like myself who have been disfigured by cancer, - she is a kind, funny, sympathetic person, and a brilliant doctor, - who happens to be very beautiful.

It's sad that when she does so much to help people who have problem needing plastic surgery, that she herself should be judged harshly for her looks.

PostBellumBugsy · 24/07/2012 16:43

KurriKurri, very best wishes with your forthcoming op.

I probably still won't watch the programme, but it is good to know that Dr Ali has merit (lots by the sound of things), even if the programme seems like it was disappointing.

Minimammoth · 24/07/2012 16:58

Thank you Kurri, yes that is good to hear, I am glad that she excels in her profession and wish you well for your op. it's a pity the horizon team did not do her justice.

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 24/07/2012 17:29

I think Horizon has become very dumbed down over the years (or perhaps it always was?) it wasn't a particularly informative programme, but I wanted to put in a good word for Rozina Ali - she is a lovely person, and I know a lot of people who have her as their surgeon and think very highly of her too.

The programme is up for criticism and everyone is totally entitled to comment of course, and to find her irritating as a presenter if that is how they feel. I think comments about her appearance are a bit unfair, - she looks as she looks, she's a glamorous elegant woman IMO, - but still displayed the usual insecurities about being seen without her make-up I thought.

Of course it's very subjective trying to guess how old people are - I was surprised to learn she was 44, - having seen her in RL I would have guessed much younger.

I have heard her lecture on plastic surgery for cancer patients (for a charity that I belong to), and she was very informative, expert and an excellent speaker, - so I think the programme definitely didn't do her justice if people have gained the impression she is somehow a light weight scientifically speaking.

It's interesting to hear what others made of the programme though - obviously I'm coming from a slightly different viewpoint, and not necessarily and objective one, - but it all adds to the debate Smile

Maybe she'll give me a free jar of the wonder cream next time I see her, - I certainly don't look 34 Grin

SoleSource · 24/07/2012 20:47

Not my idea of what a beautiful woman looks like. I did slightly warm to her as a person.

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/07/2012 20:56

I watched this last night and found it disappointing. A bit science-lite, plus too much like an extended advert for Unilever and L'Orieal. DH and I were duscussing whether science programmes had found their Nigella equivalent. I did quite like Rozina Ali though, she had a sense of humour and seemed genuinely excited by the subject. Too many shots of her walking through a variety of cities though - it's supposed to be science, not a travelogue. But that's not her fault, it's down to the editing team.

ihatethecold · 25/07/2012 08:57

I think it's quite sad how people are slating the presenter about her age. Sad
Quite bitchy really!

She is quite clearly a stunning clever woman who has got a fantastic career and came across as a nice person.
Why criticise her for her looks?
