..can I get away with telling ds2 that the wolf was just chasing the baby caribou to give him a bit of a wash? He (and ds1) would love it - but I don't know about the 'eating' bits Grin

As a child I used to get really upset by the big bad carnivores eating the cuddly little herbivores but, honestly, I think my kids may be made of sterner stuff than me.

Any thoughts?

God don't ask me I had to stop watching when this happened as it upset my pregnant self too much! Grin

SorenLorensen · 05/03/2006 22:55

Pregnant peeps are not representative though, are they? I used to cry at the Andrex ads when I was pregnant Grin.

How you doing now, emkana?

(It's marthamoo btw - in case you didn't know)

Not too bad, thanks for asking! Having another scan on Wednesday to check the size of the ventricles. Last time around the consultant couldn't get a good view but reckoned they were around 11mm, which would be all right-ish.

Feel quite positive and hopeful atm that all will be okay.

SorenLorensen · 05/03/2006 22:58

I'm glad you're feeling more positive - this has been a rough ride for you.

Not pg but had to leave the room at various points, incl the polar bears 'in danger', the elephant that walked off the wrong way to look for his mum, oh can't go on...
Why do they do this, eh?
And how will you get round showing them the great big f* off shark leaping in the air with a cutesy cuddly seal clamped in its jaws?

Jodee · 05/03/2006 23:13

Pruni, it was the elephant that brought a lump to my throat. Sad

My two cats loved it, had their noses glued to the screen!

elastamum · 05/03/2006 23:14

I will show it to DS1 7 and DS2 5. i thought that it was really good and after all its not as bad as Jurassic park or star wars etc etc. At least it is real life and it shows how beautiful the planet is. I think the kids will love it and they were very dissapointed it was on after bedtime

SorenLorensen · 05/03/2006 23:20

Why couldn't they have flown the helicopter at the elephant and kind of herded it back in the right direction? That was so sad...(but I could easily tell the kids it would have realised and turned round before long).

elastamum, it's repeated on Saturday, BBC2, at an earlier time (can't remember when - they mentioned it at the end).

it's being repeated on Saturday, BBC 2 at 6.30pm - just right for kiddies! we are going to get our dd2 ($) to watch it.
it was a wonderful show but I was nearly crying when the baby elephant got lost looking for her mother and followed the tracks in the wrong direction....life is hard in the animal world I guess.

Furball · 06/03/2006 10:01

Yeah, I also felt really sad watching that poor elephant.

It was fun watching them swim though once the floods came.

Also the footage of the great white shark eating the baby seals I though was amazing. When the head came up out of the water it was like a scene from Jaws! Then the whole body lifting out of the water - Truely spectacular.

bakedpotato · 06/03/2006 10:25

Oh, sob, please let's not talk about the baby caribou
Couldn't bear the way it just sank down as the wolf caught it and waited to be eaten

Nothing has changed for me since 1973 when I first started watching nature programmes
I still want a pet polar bear Grin

monkeytrousers · 07/03/2006 13:14

Didn't know there was another thread. I was inconsolable about the elephant. And I'd forgotten about the baby caribou, it just gave up, didn't it? It's so horrible. Not sure if I can watch again. I really was traumatised by it. And the camera man baying for the dogs to get the Impala. Bloodthirsty savages. It's so odd aestheticising such horror.. The technology and pictures are fantastic but the structure of heartwarming/traumatising got a bit tedious I thought. It was all too much!!

Ds is only 17 months so is in bed by then but if it was me I'd tape it and edit the bad bits out. I couldn't watch stuff like this as a child and still can't!

SorenLorensen · 07/03/2006 13:21

I would have been inconsolable as a child but I'm made of sterner stuff now. The eating bits really don't bother me at all (though I was willing that baby caribou to keep running), but the elephant going the wrong way did make me feel sad.

I am going to let the kids watch it - with me doing the "yes, but if the wolf didn't eat the caribou then it would die, wouldn't it?" - mainly because I want them to see that insane bird of paradise with the blue 'face' Grin I loved it when it did all its "whoo hoo! lookee me! I'm the business!" and the female bird did the bird equivalent of "yeah...whatever" and just flew off.
