Made 3 nervous comments about not being popular/maybe needing a new job. Bit worrying about mentioning God in his decision to go to war with Iraq. What do you think?

He was obviously uncomfortable and I'm sure he knew that Kevin Spacey would have a reaction when questioned about Bushy.

paolosgirl · 04/03/2006 23:12

Bliar....a Freudian slip perhaps????

Hattie05 · 04/03/2006 23:13

I saw about five minutes worth, just before the ad so i missed the rest of the convo about his fil's spliff. Did he go into any more detail?

I couldn't understand why he needed to bring that up except to appeal to the spliff smoking community Smile. Did he really mean to say "of course i said no" as in no he didn't mind him smoking it in his house.

LOL sorry didn't hear the bit abour the war, but i must say the small bit i did see, for the first time i saw a fairly nice normal person, rather than the toffee nosed git he often appears.

SecondhandRose · 04/03/2006 23:22

I think he meant no he didn't mind.

Perhaps he'd like to meet my 42 year old brother who is mentally ill from smoking cannabis. He's been like it 20 years now. Has a law degree but can only manage to stack shelves at night in Tesco so he doesn't argue with /frighten people and get sacked.

The other thing is that the dealers of cannabis are usally part of a chain which supplies other drugs, and by buying cannabis you are helping to support that entire chain and supply network, and the crime etc that comes with it. Not a laughing matter at all, Tone..

Hattie05 · 04/03/2006 23:33

Am i being a prude to be shocked that he mentioned this on national tv?? will he get slated now?

Dior · 04/03/2006 23:35

Can't believe that he lowered himself to go on Parky. Must be desperate to win votes.

paolosgirl · 04/03/2006 23:36

No, I don't think you're a prude. I think it smacks of someone who is desperate to be seen to be 'cool' - but comes over a bit like your dad trying to dance iykwim.

Hattie05 · 04/03/2006 23:38

lol paolosgirl, i think that is so true!

WestCountryLass · 04/03/2006 23:50

Funny how we see things differently isn't it? I just saw that as him being asked about his relationship with his FIL and that being a conversation etched on is memory.

sophiecountessofwessex · 05/03/2006 00:38

i'm not a fan of him at all - in fact thats the understatement of the century, however i thought he came off rather well, i thought he was funny and came off as being an honest human being - which is rather annoying becuase bush is so obviously a fuckwit, every american must cringe when he goes on tv.

anyway. thought the god comment has been taken completely out of context.

like the queen, if he didn't go to church on a sunday he would be slated.

therefore its not exactly a fucking revelation that he believes in god.

he never said he asked god about going to war in iraq, what he did say was that at the end of the day the only judgement that matters is gods.

that sound like fair comment from a man who goes to church every friggin week - and i don't even like the man

WideWebWitch · 05/03/2006 10:34

I didn't see it but I'm reading a book called \link{http://www.unspeak.net/\Unspeak} atm, which talks about the way Bliar and the govt have manipulated language. The reference to god made me think of it, Blair said something like "I do believe we are right to go to war. I may be wrong to believe it but I do believe it." and the author of unspeak talks about how this manages to make him sound full of conviction while allowing for the possibility that he might have been wrong but because it was backed up by 'belief' that's ok. I do tihnk Bliar is awful and should go, absolutely. I tihnk he started well but has become power crazed and mad.

LadyTophamHatt · 05/03/2006 10:42

sophie, i agree.
Iwatched t and said to Dh that the press have completely manipulated the comment to suit them(surprise surprsie). He didn't say that God and only God would be the judge he siad something like "everyone will judge my descision the people, media....even God I suppose"(not an exact quote but pretty similar)

IMO that along way from him saying that it is up to god to judge.

I didn't tick his box in the last election but I thought he came across well. Quite normal actually.

harpsichordcarrier · 05/03/2006 10:49

I agree with custy too
I think he came across pretty well actually

Tinker · 05/03/2006 10:59

Saw the god comment on the news and agree, taken completely out of context by media. He may believe god told him to do it but that isn't what he said on Parky.

pucca · 05/03/2006 11:11

I watched the interview, and it hasn't changed my thoughts on him...I like him very much, i think he is down to earth, i think he talks from the heart, approachable, he has a sense of humour and he is human, unlike so many of the previous PM's who were the complete opposite to Tony Blair.

As for the war...it wouldn't matter who was PM, the decision unfortunately had to be made and he would have got a slating either way i think tbh.

Amanda1 · 05/03/2006 11:18

After hearing on the news about his god comment it was shocking to see how hugely it was taken out of context. Poor man, can't say anything without it being misconstrued for the media's titilation.

I think he came across well but was shocked at the state of his teeth!

bubblerock · 05/03/2006 12:06

I think he's lovely and Kevin Spacey too Grin

Miaou · 05/03/2006 12:42

Interesting about the spliff comment - I thought he said the exact opposite to what you lot thought - ie Tony Booth asked "Do you mind if I light a spliff?" and Tony Blair said "of course I said yes" (ie yes I do mind).

I thought the God stuff was fine really. He is treading a fine line between not wanting to deny his faith but also not wanting to alienate an essentially secular electorate (and look like Bush!). I thought his comment about Bush was revealing too - he was apologetic about sticking up for him but could only say "he does what he says he will do", not, "he's insightful, intelligent, deep-thinking, well-respected" - ie all the things he said about Clinton!

My fave story was the one about Clinton's advice to him re. the terrible shirts Grin
