Marbury was meant to be mad, it's true, but referring to the Queen as 'Her Royal Majesty Elizabeth Windsor' is godawful.

MissA - I thought Woody Harrelson did a fantastic job of playing Steve Schmidt as well.

Fiderer · 24/07/2012 20:06

Very shoddy writing, tribpot.

I'm surprised that US reviews haven't objected to Emily Mortimer. Your point about the dialogue was spot on, I thought.

MissAnnersley · 24/07/2012 20:18

Has anyone seen 'Recount'? I'm thinking about ordering it and wondered if it was worthwhile.

tribpot · 24/07/2012 20:56

I wonder if Emily Mortimer doesn't seem quite as woeful if you're not living in Britain and thus cringing at Sorkin's approximation of what an English person - even one who is really an American - is like? Mandy might have survived the cut if Sorkin had made her English Wink

tribpot · 02/08/2012 08:11

Oh my god. Trying to plough through episode 4. Is this ever going to get any better?

An ENTIRE episode about little more than who's making who jealous by sleeping with someone else.

Fiderer · 02/08/2012 11:25

I watched ep. 6 yesterday. Still some good bits but a lot of crap and the relationship stuff continues to be infuriating.
Patchy overall. I don't mind the sermonizing but the Maggie/Jim & Will/Mac crap is so tedious and badly done. Though I don't like either Maggie or Mac the ditsy female things they do are awful and unbelievable.

Will and Charlie are still great.

tribpot · 02/08/2012 11:55

I discover from Google I've been a bit harsh on Ep 4 in that the last 10 mins is 'some of the best television ever made' (allegedly) covering Gabby Gifford's shooting. I think some of the utter tedium of the rest of the episode is meant to contrast with this segment. However, Old Sorkin could have conveyed this in at most 5 mins of well scripted telly.

I don't know whether someone told him his characters need to have more love interest baloney, and so he's written it in, but it's virtually impossible to sustain with a cast of intentionally flawed characters we don't know well yet. It's like trying to do the Josh and Donna storyline in season 1, it couldn't have worked. The Matt/Harriet storyline in Studio 60 was annoying in parts but at least they had plenty of other things to do - Mac and Maggie (and Jim) appear to exist for little more reason than to 'do relationship shit'.

tribpot · 02/08/2012 11:55

Oh god and all the crap about Bigfoot? God almighty. Give Dev some work to do!

Fiderer · 02/08/2012 13:19

A "Dev's found something really interesting" could have been quirky without Bigfoot, fgs.

He is good, isn't he? I watched the "making of" where Sorkin said Neal was only going to be a small side role but Dev was so good in the pilot that he wrote the character in properly.

Which episodes have been shown in the UK? I'm trying not to give any spoilers which means not be able to say "Xyz was v well done." I can stick to complaining about Maggie and Mac for a while though Grin

tribpot · 02/08/2012 13:53

We're only up to 4, so we still have many hours of turgid telly ahead.

tribpot · 02/08/2012 18:20

Finished it. Not a patch on anything similar on TWW obviously - I'm thinking of CJ reporting the college shooting as it was being recounted to her through her earpiece - or even the emotion of the end of Studio 60 when Tom's brother was kidnapped and they were desperate to keep it off the news.

TinyPawz · 03/08/2012 17:04

Marking my place

tribpot · 03/08/2012 17:13

You'll be grateful we went on ahead, TinyPawz, to beat a path for you.

TinyPawz · 03/08/2012 17:41

According to wiki (which is always right) this has been renewed for second season.

tribpot · 03/08/2012 17:48

I know, it's unbelievable. When Studio 60 got binned off this one gets a second series Confused Hopefully Sorkin will use this rare opportunity to redeem himself.

Fiderer · 03/08/2012 18:46

Sorry TinyPawz but you said you'd be internet-weedy till September and the Sorkin-temptation was too great.

Wait till you see Emily Mortimer, there's a huff and then some.

Tee2072 · 07/08/2012 20:12

Watching episode 7...shhhhhhh....

Tee2072 · 08/08/2012 08:01

Episode 7 just got Sorkin Good. I can finally say I really like the show.

tribpot · 08/08/2012 08:17

Still slogging through ep 5 here, glad to hear there's an improvement on the way.

Fiderer · 08/08/2012 08:21

I got half way through last night and then had streamingproblems to go to sleep.
Must say it was the first time I was really wanted to know what happens next.

tribpot · 08/08/2012 08:24

Yes, what I've enjoyed about this one so far is they appear to be covering news stories, which is sort of useful in a programme about a news show. Bit of stuff for Dev Patel to do, which is always good, but the 'Econolady teaches Mackenzie about economics' was a bit too 'Sam teaches CJ about the census'. (Much as last week was a bit too 'The Midterms').

TinyPawz · 11/08/2012 18:31

you are all very very mean....not back to the land of normal internet connection til end of the month......

tribpot · 11/08/2012 19:46

Enjoy this period of your life, TinyPawz. It's like being pregnant and thinking 'god all the people in my antenatal group who've had their baby are sooo lucky' and then you have yours and think 'god I didn't know how good it was being pregnant' Wink

Fiderer · 12/08/2012 07:00

Tiny When you're back in the Sorkin-available land, I'll re-watch all of them with you (and try to keep my Mac/Maggie strangling fantasies to a minimum).

Episode 8 airs tonight...

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2012 10:24

I can't remember which episode I'm on. I've just seen the one where they were all dying to get duffed up in Tahrir Square because that's what real journalism is all about, Goddammit!

Did Will pay $250,000 out of his own pocket to pay the ransom of the Egyptian? I know he gets paid a lot but if he lashes out money there and $50,000 on that evil celeb gossip hag's restaurant he's going to be a bit short by the end of the series.

How much did the rest of the newsroom chip in? And how cheerful were they about it?

Has Aaron Sorkin never worked in a real office where it's like drawing teeth to get people to hand over a pound a week for the tea club?
