Who else is watching?

it's interesting, especially as none of them have had a strop and refused to do their part as it would have been

It was great!

I'm glad all the families are likeable and 'into' it - especially the teenage girls! God the working class one looked grim!

savoycabbage · 26/06/2012 22:04

Sounds interesting. What channel is it on?

NickyNackyNooNoo · 26/06/2012 22:04

Really interesting, especially the upper class mum missing her kids - I think that living the life is totally different to looking back through rose tinted glasses!

sassytheFIRST · 26/06/2012 22:07

Thought it was interesting that the poorest family seemed to be the least emotional - just rolled sleeves up and got on with it. And saw the most of each other - reckon that was also a factor, they could be the most like a modern family in that way despite the awful hard work/ cold/diet etc.

Moln · 26/06/2012 22:12

BBC1 savy cabbage.

Yes the family at no 3 had a better family life. But that was the aim wasn't it to work together to keep the family fed and under a roof.

Imagine the life with a father who wouldn't work and drank away the money the mother brought in - horrible!

Thank you Moin. I will watch it on iplayer this afternoon.

middleclassmum · 27/06/2012 12:02

Thanks HoldMeCloserTonyDanza for the 'likeable' comment. Lovely to hear all your views! And glad that you enjoyed it. It was a wonderful experience for our family - imagine being able to live history (even if only for a short time)...

FrillyMilly · 27/06/2012 12:10

I really enjoyed it and agree they were all likeable. So often with programmes like this they set up a figure to hate/mock. Perhaps because this was more about reliving history (or perhaps because it wasn't on channel 4).

The lower class ones really got stuck in. Well done for those girls. I could imagine when I was 15 I may have had a big strop. I felt so sorry for the middle and upper class ones. They obviously found it hard to be hands off with their children. I really felt for the dad when he went to the theatre by himself.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 27/06/2012 12:11

That middle class guy was loving it, I thought!

I got a bit distracted by the ludicrousness of Genevieve's bun though!

NotGeoffVader · 27/06/2012 12:15

Really enjoyed it - just my sort of programme. Unfortunately will miss next week's as away on hols - so it will be iplayer on my return.

Anyone know what eras are being covered by the rest of the series? I think next week is the 1920's.

Shift · 27/06/2012 12:21

Wartime (inevitably) 1960s and 1970s, I think. But I have no insider knowledge. I just gleaned that from watching the beginning of the first episode.

Surprisingly (given that I am a history buff) I am actually looking forward more to the 60s and 70s as that was the time of my childhood. I think the wartime period has been looked at so frequently, we all know what it is going to be like, and the same goes for the Edwardian period to some extent. Not to say that it wasn't a fascinating programme last night.

I have to say, and I am conscious that middle class mum may be reading this, but I found some of middle class man's responses to his children a bit difficult last night. I know he was playing the part, but when he made his son cry (twice) I actually wondered whether he was going to survive the tv show with his marriage in tact!

middleclassmum · 27/06/2012 12:41

Haha Shift! He was playing the role in the manual - it's amazing how quickly you adapt once in the house and once wearing the clothes. We knew (and the children very quickly caught on) that luckily it was only temporary and that Daddy isn't really like that. They obviously edit in the worst bits! It really was discipline for disciplines sake.

Oh and - TheOriginalSteamingNit - he really wasn't loving it! I can assure you of that!

The next episode covers the interwar years - the next WWII - then the 60s and 70s. We leave after WWII - leaving the teenagers to take over!

Shift · 27/06/2012 14:13

How much briefing did the children have before the programme started middleclassmum? Your youngest seemed very young. I bet you gave him some crafty cuddles when the camera was off you Wink I would have done!

Oh that is a shame that we are not going to see what your children make of the 60s and 70s - or will there be some other young children taking part then?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 27/06/2012 14:33

Oh I didn't realise it was you! Blush - to be fair that is the kind of username there's quite a lot of on MN.....

Apologies to your husband, but he did seem initially rather to jump at the 'I'm in charge now!' idea - but things look different from the outside I expect.

TrumptonTheBodkin · 27/06/2012 18:10

I loved the programme and thought that it was so sad how much the men missed their time with the children ( Middle and Upper Class ).

Loved the stumbling apology about breaking the cup . I can remember being terrified to tell my Great Aunt ( she would have been born 1893) about any breakages.

Moln · 27/06/2012 22:05

why did he go to the theatre on his own? Did they explain that? I'd have understood if he went with friends/male relatives/people to impress. Seemed odd.

Always thought being an upper class woman must have been hidously boring.

Anyone watch this week? Again I felt all families came across well, and really felt for the Meadows.
Next week looks hard on the younger children.

Moln · 03/07/2012 22:54

Oh narks!

Totally forgot it was on.

Annoyed with myself now!
