Did Anyone Watch The Time Travellers Wife?

I recorded it the other night and tried to watch it earlier but had to give up (at the bit when he went missing for 2 weeks) as it just seemed pointless. Does it get better or shall I delete?

I enjoyed it and yes it does get better. But I would always say If you didn't enjoy the first half then don't bother - unless you have time on your hands, why waste it watching something you aren't enjoying? :)

Thanks Lemele, DP is out tonight so I may go back to it if the telly is rubbish later

The book was great. I have heard that the film does not come anywhere near it.

bigTillyMint · 15/06/2012 17:00

I read the book which took a bit of getting into and then I was completely hooked. The film was nowhere near as good. Read the book instead!

3littlefrogs · 15/06/2012 17:01

I loved the book, but how anyone could think that it would translate well to the screen is beyond me.

MrsVamos · 15/06/2012 17:05

I loved the book, was disappointed with the film.

I suppose because ultimately when you read you use your imagination, and it's difficult when your 'imaginings' are different to what you see.

My Sister's Keeper is on on Sunday evening, I have read that and have seen/heard that the ending is very different in the film. I will be annoyed if they have changed it drastically.

bigTillyMint · 15/06/2012 17:09

MrsVamos, the ending is different. Again, I preferred the book.

JuliaScurr · 15/06/2012 17:12

Do they always change the story for the film because of copyright? Artistic decision? Or what?

MrsVamos · 15/06/2012 17:17

I wondered that too, Julia.

Yes, I know that the ending is different, bigTillyMint. Smile

Does it ruin the film, so to speak ? Does it make it worse because the ending in the book is the way it is ?

(Don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it !)

Lemele · 15/06/2012 21:07

I think they change endings for hollywood audiences, i.e. dumbing down, only happy endings allowed in most circumstances, etc. It is annoying, though!

astreetcarnamedknackered · 15/06/2012 21:12

I watched it recently. I think the film was awful. Creepily paedophillic in places.

They reduced a book about flawed partner who disappears, drinks and is generally a real git (time travelling being a metaphor) to a literal interpretation which sanitised a lot of his flaws so making it a floppy luff story. Hmm

whatkungfuthat · 15/06/2012 21:16

I think that is what made me stop watching, all that stuff about going back to see a little girl.

I loved the book but a bit worried I'm being thick in my understanding of the novel now.... I mean, Henry is LITERALLY time travelling in the book isn't he? I know its a larger metaphor for "bloody men are always leaving" but it's literal in the story?

And yes, the film does just make him look like he's grooming her. Doesn't work on screen.

cheapskatemum · 15/06/2012 21:46

IKnowYou, I'm now thinking I must be thick about both the book (which I loved) & the film (which wasn't as good, but which still passed a pleasant enough evening with a friend recently)! I only hope they don't make a film of Niffeneger's 2nd novel, "Her Fearful Symmetry"

MrsVamos · 15/06/2012 21:49

That was a strange read, I admit, cheapskatemum.

It was a shame, because in TTTW it seemed believable, in HFS it scared the heck out of me !
