It i interesting.

Fisrt off I fully agree that the majority of people claiming benefit need and deserve what they get....in fact deserve more. I also agree that there are more people who defraud the tax man etc.

However, I come from the part of Wales that has the highest levels of disability claimants in the UK. 1/10th of all adults claim disability benefit. While I was growing up it was the norm for people to be 'on the sick' and working on the side. The favoured claims were of a 'bad back' and a nervous break down.

Reading threads on the SN boards and I want to weep at the awful lenghts people have to go through to get paltry benefits for their kids....the hoops that people have to jump through to get a blue badge for the car etc etc. yet when I was growing up (and it would seem to be the same now) there are lots of people who seem to know how to play the system to their benefit.

If 1/10 of all adults are really too ill to work, the place needs a major health investigation. But in reality many of these people are swinging the lead.

You can make an argument that these people need help, as they have become depended on hand outs/ lack basic skills etc. And I would fully agree, but the system as it stands is being abused and in doing so they take money and resources from the people who really need it.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 22/02/2006 10:43

Oh well, it costs too much to chase people who cheat the system and cheat the worker, so let them get away with it!! Suits me, I dont think!

foxinsocks · 22/02/2006 10:47

I am seething at the moment because someone on our street has managed to get a disabled parking space outside their house. They don't even have a car! This is so their daughter can visit them - for some reason, she has managed to get a blue badge even though she is not disabled. Basically, on a street where you can hardly ever get a space, and it's a cul de sac so if she needs to pick him up/drop off she can just park in the road (which is what we all do), we now have a space that no-one uses at all but no-one else can park in. Oh, I forgot to mention, she works for the council (surprise, surprise).

Yet, the mother of a child with cerebral palsy in ds's class (a few roads away) was refused a disabled bay outside their house even though they get DLA and the little one has mobility problems.

It's the inequality that drives me mad. If it was a fair system to start with, there would be fewer problems down the line.

foxinsocks · 22/02/2006 10:48

that's not what I'm saying

what I'm saying is that it's probably not cost effective - I'm not saying they shouldn't do it because of that, what I'm saying is that it costs more than just the benefit fraud itself in the end so it becomes more than just the benefit as a debt to all of us

doormat · 22/02/2006 10:48

foxinsocks that is terrible, to qualify for space in my area anyway (dont know if it differs) the disabled person has to be on high rate mobility.

Blandmum · 22/02/2006 10:56

It seems utterly unbelievable that mums on MN have to go through all sorts of crap to get the basics for their kids, who are often in great need of help, and other people just seem to get away with murder.

While I was growing up we were surrounded by people who claimed , and got, all sorts of benefits for having a 'bad back', who would suppliment their income by working on the side.

So totaly unfair

mumfor1standfinaltime · 22/02/2006 10:57

I can see that it costs money and time to chase benefit cheats, but people need to know that they are being watched. I think the programme is a good idea as it can show benefit cheats/spongers that they can be watched.

Benefits to me are there only if you really need them. I have only ever claimed dole money once for a few weeks and found it so humiliating. I would do any job than claim from the state.
People who pretend to be ill/disabled have got to be the lowest of the low, they are taking the money needed for people with real disabilities.

My Mum is currently awaiting news on a liver transplant, she can not get DLA, my Dad is working 6 days a week, and he has a dodgy knee, bad back and stomach problems. He can not claim a penny.

And dont get me started on the old "I cant work because I am stressed..."

TwoIfBySea · 22/02/2006 21:02

Gosh because I voice an opinion that raises the hackles of someone I get called a namechanger? Um, no I'm not. I've been on mn for a while I'm just not one of the popular ones which is becoming obvious. I'm not going to flounce or do anything dramatic as I think if people can't see what I was talking about then I have failed to put my point across properly and will have to try better next time!

If she has to show reciepts for what shes bought then she is in deep doo-doo.

I'm all for people who need help getting everything and then some as I am well aware how some families struggle with benefits. It just seems that if you know how to play the system then the going hand gets as my mother says.

doormat · 22/02/2006 21:16

whoa was only asking, I never accused as I have not seen your name before
it was nothing personal,
once told you were not namechanger, I left it at that ok
you havent raised my hackles btw just my shackles
