I am sickened and seriously shocked by it. Cannot believe what was allowed to happen. In this day and age. Fucking atrocious.

It was utterly disgusting, especially the fact that the police / stewards just stood by and did nothing. Mind you the ones that were trying to separate fighting fans seemed to get the shit kicked out of them. There's just no place for it AT ALL in a supposedly civilised country.

And why on earth were the Poles doing Nazi salutes? I really really don't get that. In Krakow, of all places. Auschwitz is down the road and they're wearing Anti-Semitic slogans?

The mind boggles. I'm really pissed off now.

BonnieBumble · 28/05/2012 21:20

Was it on BBC2?

I missed it but will try to catch it on 2 plus 1 if it was on BBC2.

Flubba · 28/05/2012 21:25

You should be able to get it on i-player (it was on Beeb1).

It's really shaken me up.

haven't watched the programme yet but saw clips on the news

really depressing Sad

but Ukraine is a very backward country socially & probably not that different from the UK 30-40 years ago, when football here went through a lot of that stuff too

Poland, otoh...millions of Polish Catholics were killed in the Holocaust, weren't they? Don't these people know that?

ILoveOnionRings · 28/05/2012 21:26

I saw the last 15mins - it was truely shocking

headfairy · 28/05/2012 21:28

The scenes of the asian men being attacked at the game in Poland were really shocking. I'm amazed none of them got serious injuries. There was one guy at the front being repeatedly punched in the head. He looked like he was going to lose consciousness :(

Ponders · 28/05/2012 21:29

\link{http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_Catholics_were_killed_in_the_Holocaust'In the ideology of the Nazis, the Poles were considered an inferior "race."'}

kdiddy · 28/05/2012 21:32

I didn't think I was that shockable anymore, but it has really surprised me. The police chief trying to say it wasn't a Nazi salute, but that hundreds of fans were just simultaneously pointing in the same direction, with the same hand raised, would be laughable if it wasn't so depressing.

Flubba · 28/05/2012 21:34

I know! It's unbelievable. If it was a film, you'd think it was way far-fetched.

OP posts:
JollyBear · 28/05/2012 21:36

It was on.bbc1.

The policemen said the fans weren't doing Nazi salutes, they were pointing. Absolutely unbelievable.

Messing · 28/05/2012 21:39

As others have said, it was the fact that officials didn't appear to give a shit that was most shocking. You'd (sadly) expect there to be some racist nutjobs present in society but for it to go unchallenged like that is appalling.
Here's hoping society in these countries will change, much like it has done over here.

cocolepew · 29/05/2012 08:24

TBH if I was a steward I don't think I'd want to dive in amongst them on my own.

I can't believe how well co-ordinated it was.

Repulsive.

kerstina · 30/05/2012 15:00

I will catch up with this on the i player. I saw the clip on the news of the Asian men being attacked and I was in tears. Disgusting and sickening Sad

RubyFakeNails · 30/05/2012 15:53

It was truly horrible. I had been in the discussion about it here on Chat but I'll reiterate my views from that thread.

  1. Why is UEFA allowing countries with this evident problem the privilege of holding such events.
  2. It send the message the football big wigs don't see racism as an important issue.
  3. These so called fans are clearly deluded as they are generally considered to be from the slavic race and therefore Hitler would have wiped them out as well.
  4. I feel sorry for the non-white players who are going to suffer this, without the support of their families and already under intense pressure.
TwoIfBySea · 31/05/2012 20:45

It was an eye-opener wasn't it? I wouldn't want to go there regardless of ethnic background. It was like a flashback to the nightmare of Europe's history.

Considering that Poland and Ukraine both know what the Nazi's did is gut-wrenching but what got me (as a white, Scottish, female as well) was the monkey chants. Jesus but I never thought I'd hear such a thing in the 21st century.
