Am I the only person upset that the bbc has cancelled this?

I never got into downtown but have bought the box set to try. But I always preferred upstairs
Downstairs.

I didn't know they had - I was loving it, but missed the last episode as it wasn't on 'Catch Up' which is how I normally watch it on the Monday. Sad
I like Downton too though - any "Sunday evening tele" is fine by me Grin

Axed according to the Sun (this is a link to the What's on TV website, reporting on the Sun's story if you see what I mean).

The second series was incoherent - the loss of Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins from active participation? Persie managed to bring fresh reasons to hate the Nazis which is perhaps quite an achievement after all this time! But despite the hilarious daftness of some of the storylines in Downton (Syb and Branson stare soulfully at each other for YEARS etc) it has a genuine spirit which UD seemed to lack. Not to mention Downton has a cast whose male leads don't all look exactly like each other, rendering it semi-difficult to remember which is which.

GiantPuffball · 22/04/2012 17:46

It was shit though, wasn't it? The acting was beyond awful. Even Keeley Hawes couldn't make anything of those scripts.

ToryLovell · 22/04/2012 17:47

Shame, I really enjoyed it. Never got into Downton, maybe I should?

MarySA · 22/04/2012 17:50

I didn't realise they had cancelled it either. But I was very disappointed with it. They should have taken it from when the old series left off. What was the point of calling it Upstairs Downstairs when there was hardly any connection to the original series. Rant over!!

tribpot · 22/04/2012 20:05

Yes, as it was more like CSI: Miami or NCIS: Los Angeles, they should really have called it Upstairs Downstairs: Late 1930s.

ChablisLover · 22/04/2012 20:46

Agree this series was a wee bit all over the place but I enjoyed it.

Was hoping bbc would give it another chance to see how they managed ww2

Tory Downton is 100% better than U.S. which I wanted to like but the script was so odd and disconnected like they were trying to 'modernise' it in some weird totally unnecesary way and some of the acting so bad that i'm not surprised it's been pulled TBH.

Nospringchickendipper · 23/04/2012 16:24

Chablislover I agree with you I liked Upstairs Downstairs my DD and I watched it together, we also watched Dowton but I thought the last series got a bit silly at times.Bring back Upstairs Downstairs

GeorginaWorsley · 23/04/2012 17:04

Love Downton, love original Upstairs, quite liked this version.
Anything better than endless reality/cookery/cop shows.
Ratings weren't that bad, should have continued into WW2 imo.
Do think more should have been made of link to past Upstairs Downstairs.
Suppose the absence of Rose didn't help.

ppeatfruit · 24/04/2012 10:07

Yes georgina Agree it was better than the 'endless reality\cop\mindless quiz shows' I like SOME cookery progs though Blush. Raymond Blanc YUM (him and the food Blush

Clawdy · 24/04/2012 22:47

Jean Marsh made a few rather derogatory remarks about Downton in the early days, which smacked a little of sour grapes,I think.

FayeGovan · 24/04/2012 23:15

did Rose come back as an older Rose in the newer upst downst?

was she still a ladies maid or whatever she was?

ppeatfruit · 25/04/2012 09:29

I think she came back for one ep. as the housekeeper but she seemed very fragile it was a shame all round.

Nospringchickendipper · 25/04/2012 15:26

Rose came back as a housekeeper in the first series, then in rl Jean Marsh had a stroke so it was written in that she had TB and she was only in the series briefly.

diddl · 25/04/2012 15:30

For me it was just getting interesting tbh.

Would have enjoyed a series about Lady A & the Alex Kingston character coping without the men tbh.

And more of Pamela.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 26/04/2012 19:05

I loved the original UD and I did enjoy this one as well. I would have liked to have seen the third series go through the war. My major complaint was that the actors maybe tried a bit too hard to be terriblay terriblay U and it made it all seem a bit forced and wooden. If they'd relaxed a bit. I love Downton too but when I watch I just remember how UD did it all first :-)

ChablisLover · 26/04/2012 20:40

Have ordered series one on DVD
To ease the pain.
