I am old - can someone explain what are these 'licks' of which Jessie J speaks?

she went on a lot about 'licks and tricks' last night on the Voice. She also said someone was 'dope' - is that a new word for 'good'? I am nearly 40 so presumably not target market for the Voice. Can any of you young 'uns translate?

Just asked my friends DCs (aged 14 and 16).
Dope= Realy cool/great/awsome
Licks and Tricks = Confused look from both.... they have no idea what it means.

TeaandHobnobs · 08/04/2012 19:17

"licks" are the sort of warbling, run type things I think - like you hear Christina Aguilera or Mariah Carey doing... Quite hard to do - that's why you hear Jessie complimenting someone on "clean licks" - it means they are hitting all the notes in the run cleanly.
Does that make any sense?!

CroissantNeuf · 08/04/2012 19:20

Going off on a bit of a tangent but does anyone else really dislike her speaking voice?

She may be able to sing but holy moly when she opens her gob to speak its like a metal spoon on a saucepan.

GreenEyesAndHam · 08/04/2012 19:32

If you're watching the repeat on BBC3 now, do keep an eye out for Bill Je Suis' arse won't you?

It's delish

noddyholder · 08/04/2012 19:36

yes she keeps saying your licks are clean??? A bit like my cat!

GilbertandGeorge · 08/04/2012 19:36

I am trying to warm to her as I can see she's very talented, has had a less than easy time blah blah.

But she is intensely hard to like!

noddyholder · 08/04/2012 19:39

I can't help liking her My ds screams about how annoying she is (he is 17) but I kind of like that she is unrepentant in her ways. She is just so young and enthusiastic about music and the whole scene that I do quite like her

GilbertandGeorge · 08/04/2012 19:41

I like willdotIdotam best. I love his wild eyed sidewaysey stare!

learningtofly · 08/04/2012 19:43

Ah thank you I didn't know either - my singing teacher called them "aimless warbling"

foxinsocks · 08/04/2012 19:43

Lol noddy

Is there anything you watch that I don't watch? Think I've been on mumsnet since 2003 and we have always watched the same stuff lol Grin

I actually don't understand this programme at all! When will they have finished selecting all these people?

noddyholder · 08/04/2012 19:45

shoppingbagsundereyes · 08/04/2012 20:03

My sister ( who knows everything about telly) says next week is last selection. Then each team leader has to trim team down to 5 by pitting pairs against one another within their own team ( a chance to get rid of the dodgy ones they regret methinks). Then we get a weekly chance to get rid of people by voting.

Ah ha shopping. Is always important to have a family member who knows what's going on with tv (ie reads all those shite magazines by the till!)

I haven't seen will je suis's arse at all though

LittlePicnic · 08/04/2012 22:50

My problem with Jessie J is the "you can sing- you can sang"- that's really annoying because she overused the phrase. Plus when she pucks up her lips and moves her face from side to side (like some Americans do). Loving Will.i.am!

edam · 08/04/2012 22:58

Is it the vocal equivalent of guitar licks?

William just reminds me of Dr Seuss and Sam-I-Am from Green Eggs and Ham. Maybe his Mummy read it to him at an impressionable age or something.

usualsuspect · 08/04/2012 23:20

Will.i .would

SunflowersSmile · 09/04/2012 13:20

Ahh 'Green eggs and ham'. I do so hope he has heard of it. I doubt it- someone needs to send him a copy!
I am too old to warm to him but I do.. Will.I.am Green eggs and ham...
Sweetie..

GreenEyesAndHam · 09/04/2012 14:16

I'm pretty sure he's heard of it Wink

bettybat · 09/04/2012 18:12

DH is mixed race Bajan/British and grew up in south Norwood so lays stronger claims to this than me, being from Blackpool where my peers were all gangsta wannabe's without any kind of authentic exposure to West Indian culture Wink

But - he reckons she inserts these West Indian Patois words/phrases into her speech in a really unnatural way. In a way that's really forced and makes him (who when I hear him with his childhood friends reverts into south London urban slang speak) cringe. Like it jars and doesn't sound right.

Even I can recognise it and I definitely don't have the "urban" credentials to back me up Wink It's like...there's kids that grew up with it and speak it and sound comfortable with it. With Jessie J, it's all a bit rude girl try-hard

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 09/04/2012 18:20

I think in musical terms it means they really belted that part of the song out - but in a clear/clean way, so not screechy... I think.

It did annoy me when she kept on saying it and I had no idea what it meant.
