This is great. I'm in tears watching it. My own DC are about to leave a "good" school, but pastorally and socially Holyrood's streets ahead.

I'm glued! They're all so confident and great uniform standards. Poor wee Liam though!

OooohShiny · 12/03/2012 21:23

Yep - watching it now. I have a couple of friends who went there over 30 years ago and said it has always been a great school.

AgentProvocateur · 12/03/2012 21:23

It's making me wish I'd gone into teaching.

I really hope Leonie gets HG, she seems like an absolute gem.

AgentProvocateur · 12/03/2012 21:41

Poor Liam. He's got a hard road in front of him, hasn't he?

Well done, Max and Leonie!

Mr Begley seems wonderful. So pleased for Max and Leonie, did it say he was aiming for Oxford? Very, very impressed by the school as a whole.

seb1 · 12/03/2012 22:07

I didn't realise it is Europe's largest school.

AmIthatbad · 12/03/2012 22:33

I was glued. In tears at poor wee Liam though. My DD has ASD and that was one of the reasons I didn't want her to go to mainstream.

Teachers were so respected though. I was well impressed. Apparently from the people that made The Scheme, but it was certainly a very positive portrayal of a large Glasgow secondary

AgentProvocateur · 13/03/2012 13:01

AmIthatbad, did your daughter end up going to mainstream? I have worked in the past with organisations for children with SN, and I know that inclusion & mainstream is thought to be the be all and end all (and was never questioned our loud by any employees!) But I have seen so many children who kept up and were socially included in primary, really flounder in secondary as their peers move ahead socially, emotionally and intellectually.

I don't think mainstream is right for every child, particularly at secondary. I think Liam might be OK, because he's got confidence in himself and the teachers seemed keen to support him. He's obviously incredibly bright too.

I look back at my school days (30 years ago) and there were a couple of people like Liam, but in those days there was no diagnosis or support. I still see one of them sometimes, but he's seriously mentally ill and has a support worker. I always wonder if his life would have been different if he'd gone to a specialist school.

Agent She's in a unit attached to a large secondary school and she does a fair bit of her actual schooling in the mainstream classes, but they have their own "safe" place for breaks, lunch and some classes.

It would break my heart to think of her wandering around on her own, but similarly to Liam, it wouldn't bother her at all Smile

Mrsjay · 14/03/2012 08:50

I watched it its a huge school Shock our high school only has 500 pupils roughly . I was glued to it , dd left 6th year last year so she watched too , poor liam But i think he will be ok , I have a familiy member who has aspergers and goes mainstream although there is an autisim base ,

AgentProvocateur · 14/03/2012 22:01

I think that's the perfect solution - mainstream with a base for children with autism where they can feel safe.

It is a huge school - they said it was Europe's largest, which I was surprised by.

over 2000 Pupils Shock

the school the child goes to is great for her she has thrived although her mum did have to move her schools to get the help she needed ,

Did anyone watch this weeks episode of the kids going out to Malawi? It was brilliant. What an amazing school. I hope they keep up the good work now that Mr Begley is gone and the head is also retiring.

Well done Holyrood.

AgentProvocateur · 30/03/2012 17:13

Yes, I did and I got really choked up watching it. I thought all the young people and teachers were brilliant.

I watched and loved it too. It's been a really good series, very positive. Was half expecting some of the staff and pupils to get stitched up, but it was great.

Tom was a really respected HT, wonder what'll happen when he leaves, which I think he is doing at the end of term.

The bit when the children got their backpacks - I was howling with happiness and sadness.

It was nice to see where donations go - DD's primary school did backpacks a couple of years.
