Feet up. Ready to learn about the theory of exercise.

OP posts:
scattergun · 29/02/2012 19:29

I think it probably needs to be a form of exercise that makes serious aerobic demands, i.e that you can put everything into, so running or rowing would probably be equivalent. Just guessing though. It made my legs go funny after about 12 seconds and the last 8 were a real struggle. The next 2 batches weren't significantly harder though, and I did a few mins of gentle cycling in between.
I stopped about 30 mins ago and I still feel a bit sick. And I cycle regularly too. Clearly I have managed to exercise lazily for years. Quite a skill I think.

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 19:33

Is that why boxers do that mad fast skippy thing? I tried that once and nearly fainted. Mind you, that was my tits hitting me.

ArielNonBio · 29/02/2012 19:35

Skipping! That's a good idea.

Do you think "excercising so hard you're sick" was how the Horizon meant us to interpret it?

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 19:37

How about 'exercising so hard you need a nice lie down, a glass of wine and an Aero'?

scattergun · 29/02/2012 19:39

I have literally just been to the fridge, taken out a bottle of wine and put it back again unopened. I can't even face a glass of wine. Maybe that's how it's good for me.

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2012 19:40

I was thinking about this today as I don't want to buy an exercise bike which will end up never really getting used and just be in the way. Why would fast running or skipping on the spot not be enough,do you think?

I wasn't really paying attention during the NEET bit am a bit confused about the NEET bit. How does it work, or how are you supposed to do it, if you don't work in a cafe?

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 19:42

I played a game of squash once whan I'd had a few beers and it was like being on psychedelic drugs.

I may try the weights with actual bendy-movey of the legs. 3 minutes? Watch this space.

ginmakesitallok · 29/02/2012 19:45

I've heard about the NEET stuff before - it makes sense in that if you're always moving about you're using up more calories?? What I didn't understand was his claims about how it speeds up your metabolism (and how they test that??) DP says that NEET only works for a while, because your metabolism will eventually return to normal when your body gets used to moving about all the time - I have no idea if he's right or not.

Watching the programme was quite difficult - with him shouting "That's nonsense!", "oh, I know him - he's a nice bloke" "That must be such and such's lab" "That's nonsense too!" etc etc etc the whole bloody way through it.

Can you rate your sickness-factor, LineRunner? Is it just me?

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 19:53

Yeah, I feel a bit nauseous. How odd.

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2012 20:01

ha ha gimma. Think I won't stress about the NEET as not a lot most can doif have a sedentary job.

The blood sugar thing interests me though because the doctor in the programme looks pretty fit and was not overweight and yet he still showed as being a potential risk for diabetes. Which, when you've consoled yourself that your parent only got it due to being overweight, is not very reassuring.

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 20:05

All my father's side of the family drink, smoke and eat lots of red meat. They all live into their mid-80s. That's just genetic luck.

However - they have always been hard, physical workers.

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2012 20:08

well, yes, my grandparents all lived into their mid-80s also but my parents didn't. Sad

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 20:26

It's probably best to do a bit of exercise for the old brain, if nothing else, anyway.

NadiaWadia · 01/03/2012 02:36

So even sitting still for an hour at a time is bad for you?

No more TV then, presumably!

scattergun · 01/03/2012 08:04

Sorry, back again with an update. As I'm due to spend most of today on my backside, I did a quick session on the bike this morning. I did it before breakfast because I run on an empty stomach about 50% of the time and thought maybe exercising within 2 hours of dinner last night made me nauseous.
I did 2 mins warm up then the 3 20 second bursts with a 2 min slow pedal in between. And I feel mildly nauseous again.
The upshot of this is I'm craving water, something I don't usually do after running because I'm not much of a sweater and I'm so used to running possibly. I also cannot face my usual breakfast of toast or porridge at all. The only thing I can face is pears, and I'm not a fruit-for-breakfast kind of girl.
So my conclusion is that this form of exercising definitely does something different from sustained aerobic activity for me. No idea yet if that's good for me, but it's easy to fit in, nausea aside.

Aftereightsaremine · 05/03/2012 05:48

Watched this at the weekend, anyone know whether a cross trainer could work as well as bike? I'll try later. Do you think we can lose weight doing this 20 sec thing? I'm a member of a gym for last two years and last went 18 months ago, as basically can't be bothered .....
