I picked up a copy of "Making History" in Oxfam the other day - anyone read it?

Also has anyone read his new book "The Ode Less Travelled"? It's half price in Waterstones at the moment

Stephen makes my skin crawl with his smug over- cleverness.....my dh worships him

spacedonkey · 25/01/2006 10:28

you mean ... he isn't universally loved?!

An evening with stephen would undoubtedly involve some sort of pompous soliloquy at some point.....you like???

spacedonkey · 25/01/2006 10:31

hahahaha you unashamed stirrer!

SF is growing on me after I went right off him. I have to say, I thought he was great in Wilde or whatever the film about Oscar Wilde was called. I thought he would make my skin crawl with his campness, but actually, I really warmed to him in the space of that film.

I also love QI. I like it that he can be unashamedly intellectual - we aren't all on the level of BB yet! Oh and I like Alan Davies on QI too. What is the matter with you? He is so cute and funny!

oh oh oh thanks for reminding me! and I was wondering why dh refused to spend the night in Brussels tonight -- ha!

LeahE · 25/01/2006 20:43

My DH met him on a train (briefly, not like they had a long chat or anything) and said he was charming and very self-effacing.

LeahE · 25/01/2006 20:45

Met SF, that is, not sansouci's DH (although I'm sure he's charming too)

RTKangaMummy · 25/01/2006 20:45

You're welcome

IMHO he is lovely

sansouci · 25/01/2006 21:02

My dh is not charming! but it's started & he's curled up in front of the telly so bye bye.

MrsMills · 25/01/2006 21:05

Spacedonkey, I've read Making History, very clever and funny as you'd expect really.

I'd really love him to be my Uncle.

MrsMills · 25/01/2006 21:07

I can't watch it.

MrsMills · 25/01/2006 21:09

Would some one please let me know his story when it's finished?

LeahE · 25/01/2006 22:05

MrsMills - You can read the summary here on the BBC website.

One of the things he had at the start was a photo of the Lamm family (mentioned in the last paragraph) - parents and three children - and had particularly wanted to find out their names and what had happened to them.

Twiglett · 25/01/2006 22:06

there is something terrible about turning your back on a part of history that exists because people were able to turn their backs

LadySherlockofLGJ · 25/01/2006 22:08

I sobbed with him how very very sad.

spacedonkey · 25/01/2006 23:29

What a brilliant programme. It made me cry too. Very sad.

Made me cry too, especially as I know we would find similar things if we ever researched my MiL's family - she was put on a train to England at 12 years old and never saw her family again. The part that really haunts me though is her telling me that a cardboard box was handed into the train window just before it left, the box contained twin babies. What are you going through when that is the best option for your family?

mummytosteven · 26/01/2006 09:02

excellent program. I was tearful too.

Bit close to home for me.

But a lovely programme nonetheless and Stephen came out of it very well.
