House - will I like it?

DH has bought the first season for us to watch as we are running out of viewing.

I know we are very late to the party but I don't really know anything about it - is it any good?

Yes, it's good although it does start to get a bit samey in season 3. Patient arrives in hospital with mysterious illness. House and his team try a number of different treatments while the patient deteriorates before they finally diagnose the illness in the nick of time. Fortunately they changed it enough in season 4 that it got interesting again. We've just finished season 6 which was very good.

Thanks - will give it a go then Smile

I started watching it from scratch a year ago. LOVE IT! Am now desperately awaiting the second half of Season 8 on Sky!

SpottyTeacakes · 22/01/2012 17:46

Love House!

CeliaFate · 22/01/2012 17:54

It's brilliant. So well written, witty, thought-provoking and intelligent. Love it!

NoWuckingFurries · 22/01/2012 17:57

Yes. And Hugh Laurie is amazing in it and I totally would Blush Grin

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 22/01/2012 17:58

Is it funny then? Sorry if I'm being dense but it really has passed me by - I'm clueless.

It's a drama, but House has some really acerbic, witty lines. For example in the early series his team is a black man from the 'hood (Foreman), a white privileged privately educated man(Chase) and a woman who fancies House(Cameron).
A prisoner on death row comes into the hospital. Foreman suspects an overdose. Chase asks how a death row prisoner can get hold of drugs, to Foreman's amazement.
House says, "Not really your area, Chase. We'll come to you when we have a yachting question".
Not funny written down, but the delivery is fab.

FaithHopeAndKevin · 22/01/2012 18:07

It is very formulaic - I'd amend House and his team try a number of different treatments while the patient deteriorates before they finally diagnose the illness in the nick of time to

House and his team try a number of different treatments usually involving removal of limbs and/or body parts and an argument with Cuddy while the patient deteriorates before they finally diagnose the illness in the nick of time.

CeliaFate · 22/01/2012 18:09

The first few in Series 1 are formulaic, after that it's much more character driven.

40notTrendy · 22/01/2012 18:09

We like it, it's v witty and well acted. But the stories are all basically the same. ( we are only on series 2 though). It's good to dip into once a week or so, but not as compulsive as Sopranos or West Wing we found.

BrigitBigKnickers · 22/01/2012 18:12

It is totally fab! The first three series are definitely the best. It is so well written- very witty and Hugh Laurie is amazing in it (and surprisingly gorgeous too- I have developed a real crush!)

FaithHopeAndKevin · 22/01/2012 18:13

Yeah but they still never get a patient in, examine it and say "it's lupus, we'll give you this treatment" and that's it Grin They never get it right first time, House has to argue with one of them, Robert Sean Leonard has to have his cameo, the junior docs have to go to the patient's house, there's got to be some unresolved sexual tension, an "amusing" incident in the clinic, they go through lots of different drugs, argue with Cuddy about treatment, chop a few bits out/off the patient - I'm not saying it's not interesting - it's just a tad predictable sometimes Smile

FaithHopeAndKevin · 22/01/2012 18:15

That's it - it's no West Wing - that I'd stay up to watch another episode of, even if I'd already seen 3 that evening, just because I wanted to find out what happened next. House is a one-a-night thing.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 22/01/2012 18:20

I've not seen West Wing or the Sopranos - shall I put them on the list to watch?

OP posts:
Raahh · 22/01/2012 18:28

I disagree- i could happily watch several episodes of House in one go- and did (we only got into it a couple of years back, so had some catching up to do).

Although 'West Wing'- which Dh raved about, I totally hated!! Ditto '24'.

And it latter series they often take the piss out of previous cases, and themselves (i.e the fact it is never lupusGrin).

It is clever- and if you like Sherlock at all- it's fun to spot the references.

I do love Hugh Laurie, though, which helps a lotGrin

RedHotPokers · 22/01/2012 18:52

I am a 'box set' obsessive (hardly watch any 'normal' tv anymore!), and am slowly working through all the programmes I missed the first time round.

Sopranos is by far the best programme I have EVER watched by a mile.
I also really love West Wing (currently on series5).

Just bought series 2 of 24, which I'm not a big fan of. Really struggled to watch series 1 but DH loves it. I just find the characters SO unlikeable and annoying.

Am pondering on Greys Anatomy, once I've finished WW????

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 22/01/2012 19:27

I think the thing with 24 was that it was so far ahead of it's time when it came out, it was brilliant. By the later series, the rest of TV had caught up so it wasn't so stand out good any more.

Will look out for Sopranos. I can't wait for Walking Dead to come back.

mosschops30 · 22/01/2012 21:31

I used to love house when the old team were in it.
Then Taub, Thirteen etc were good.
But i cant stand the new lot especially the whiney girl.

Ive found the last two series ridiculous, so now i dont bother, there are far better things on tv

Halbanoo · 22/01/2012 21:58

I stopped watching it after the first episode of the most current season. New cast is awful, it's not the same w/o Cuddy, and Hugh Laurie seems like he's just given up. Up til this series, it's been fab. I think it has passed its prime now.
