Finally started watching Frozen Planet today - we don't have our TV connected so don't see things when originally on (and far too lazy/disorganised to catch things on iplayer Blush) but it's out on DVD now, hurrah!

Wow! We were all captivated, I didn't think DD (4.6) would be interested given her love of cartoons Hmm but she really liked it and we will watch the rest. DS (2.4 but speech delayed) loved it too, he was very excited about the Buh (birds) :)

So, I'd like to see some more worthy shows :o

I guess there's Blue Planet too, and there was something a year or two back about some explorers in some far flung place where they discovered shed loads of new terrifying insects?

What about Walking with Dinosaurs or something? Would it be scary for a sensitive 4yo?

Would really welcome suggestions, I get free DVD rentals at work so price not an issue.

Earthflight. Great Barrier Reef.

My 4yo is not sensitive but was traumatised by Walking with Dinosaurs. The 'big ones eat the little ones' quite frequently. Oddly she was not bothered about Polar Bears eating seal pups or sea lions and whales eating penguins Hmm

Meercat Manor was something they both liked. I think you can the repeats on Demand Five.

Marching with Penguins is meant to be fabulous - haven't got round to seeing it yet. Ditto the one currently showing on Thursdays (?) - Earthflight.

Here's the Attenborough ones as listed on Wiki:

David Attenborough
Some documentaries are also presented as television miniseries. The most notable of these are the BBC's 'Life' series, written and presented by Sir David Attenborough, whose contribution to conservation is widely regarded, and whose programmes have been seen by millions of people throughout the world. The series comprises:
Life on Earth (1979), 13 episodes
The Living Planet (1984), 12 episodes
The Trials of Life (1990), 12 episodes
Life in the Freezer (1993), 6 episodes
The Private Life of Plants (1995), 6 episodes
The Life of Birds (1998), 10 episodes
The Life of Mammals (2002), 10 episodes
Life in the Undergrowth (2005), 5 episodes
Life in Cold Blood (2008), 5 episodes
Life (2009), 10 episodes

fuzzpig · 08/01/2012 20:07

Ooh thanks for all these suggestions! Desperate to borrow them all right now but I'll stick to one at a time :o

DD loves Wallace and Gromit but didn't particularly understand the World of Invention series - might give it another try now she's older.

My nephew loved walking with dinosaurs at 3

What about Deadly 60? Its for kids and not at all like Attenborough documentaries but very interesting and fun. I think I've seen it on DVD.

mrsjay · 10/01/2012 09:30

oo yes deadly 60 you should be able to find it on bbc iplayer .

fuzzpig · 10/01/2012 13:51

Ah yes deadly 60 seems quite good. I think there was an arty version too where they did collages etc based on the animals? It was on one of the tellies at the gym where I haven't been in nearly a year once IIRC.

Just noticed a book of First Life which I guess DD would like as she is interested in trilobites (thanks to DH)

I wonder if there are any more geography/history based ones? I remember a couple of videos dad had about the grand canyon and devils tower.

Just remembered there was a series about toys? Where they built a huge house from Lego?

Deadly 60 seemed to have some art component when it was on this morning but we had to leave for school.
fuzzpig, you might be thinking of that series by James May? That was good too.

Roar is good. I think it is on BBc1 or ITV1.
